Virtual Reality with Sweethome3d available!
Hello,
I tried to experience my sweethome3d design in a virtual reality environment and bought a cardboard for an Android phone for that.
Initially there have been a few glitches, but in the meantime the obj2vr has fixed bugs with the sweethome3d model I submitted to him (many thanks for that Brian!).
Just wanted to share this, since it is a really low cost path from sweethome3d into VR.
Pay attention to select a phone with a good sensor subsystem, e.g. a Nexus 5 device gives a much better experience than a Galaxy S4.
Enjoy Rainer
PS: There is one major glitch left, everything is flipped horizontally.

Re: Virtual Reality with Sweethome3d available!
Hello. Intresting post. I'm a happy owner of VR Glasses (Homido) for Android smartphone, and I want to walk into my new kitchen design with Sweet Home 3D :)
Can you tell me more ? How you export the 3D models from Home Sweet Home, and import it to Obj2vr ?

Hi,
export to the OBJ format from sweethome3d and import that to obj2vr as descripbed on the website.
Make sure to copy all files created during the export to the phone.
Rainer
This certainly sounds interesting. Can you describe how to drive it in more detail. I tried the app, and either it doesn't agree with my old xperia-p phone, or I can't figure it out.
I created a 3Dmodels folder at the same level as the Alarms, Android, Download, ... folders. I copied in my model. But after restarting the app, I could not see and option to switch from the default model. There did appear to be a file window/menu in one part of the 3D view, but tapping on it didn't seem to do anything, and it didn't list my new model either.
Maybe it doesn't help that I don't have a cardboard viewer (I've got one on order from ebay for $2.09). I will probably try again when the viewer arrives.

With a Nexus 5x this is really beautiful, also the controls to move around and up and down are much better now (though moving stairs up is not really possible, just vertically up and down).
The only issue I still see is that the entire scene is mirrored (i.e. left and right are interchanged). Do I miss something? Is there a chance to make sweethome3d to mirror the scene while exporting to the obj format?

Good news for Galaxy S6 users: The App works with the gear set! But: It'a a bit tricky. First you must deactivate the automatic start of the gear app so that you can watch vr stuff from other producers. You will find a howto somewhere in the net. After having installed the app and export to the phone the way it is described here you can walk through your Apartment...But: It is all mirrored :-(... But: there is another little trick: Install copytofurniture plugin in sh3d. Mark your whole Project and make a furniture out of it ;-). Paste it into a new empty Project. Doubleclick on it. Now you can mirror the "furniture". Export it to obj-File. Now you can have fun with your gear. However: it doesn't work perfect. It takes very long to load. It doesnt show everything of a larger projekt. I don't know why. Too little RAM? Can the developer improve it or fix at least the bug with the mirroring? Apart from that: This app is realy fantastic!

Re: Virtual Reality with Sweethome3d available!
It looks like obj2vr is no longer being developed. I e-mailed the developer asking for an improved paid app but got no response.
Has anybody found better VR alternatives? I have tried Sketchfab with the Gear VR using their WebVR website (you have to use the Samsung Internet browser inside the Gear VR and navigate to your model, then start WebVR), but the quality of the WebVR is still very poor (you move your head and it takes a while for the camera to catch up, rendering details are low quality, etc.)
Obj2Vr is still better than Sketchfab but I have three issues: 1) you can only see approx. 25 ft into the distance, anything after that is plain blue (i have large rooms) 2) lighting is off, everything looks gray instead 3) my home is too big, so Sweethome3D won't allow me to copy as furniture and flip it
So has anybody in the meanwhile found a better alternative to view .obj models in VR?
