Re: my bathroom
Very nice Chris. Did you compute these image with the Advanced rendering plug-in or with the beta version 3.0? I would say the plug-in because the light doesn't seem to go through the glass in the first image, but I'm not sure...

Re: my bathroom
Thank you Hans, and Puybaret..
It was rendered with Advanced Rendering, 3.0 has slightly different settings for caustics that I'm not as familiar with yet. I know I will have to relearn a lot of the refraction, transparency settings now, once you get 3.0 as a full install version. But since I'm experimenting with the meshes of the obj file, and transparency settings, I stayed with what I know for now.
The mesh had a lot to do with how light is refracted so I'm trying to see if I can layer the meshes without getting too much for the renderer to compute. The shelf side handles has four different meshes layered with all of them having a slightly different transparency number in the mtl file.
And I'm not exactly sure how to share all the experiments I've done.. lol.. I guess I could paste the mtl file, but without the meshes to go along with it, I'm not sure how useful that would be to someone who wanted to try to get this effect.
EDIT:
Also the flat part of the shelf also has a texture applied to a mesh in the middle, which is also why the light is not passing through as clearly as just a normal piece of glass. I was trying to mimic a wavy glass look, but the texture kind of faded into a opaque look.

Re: my bathroom
Chris,
About sharing...
We could start simple, let's say we "publish" for every trick: 1 - an OBJ file for a standard box 2 - a MTL file for the effect 3 - a picture to show the effect
That wouldn't be too complex??

Re: my bathroom
Ok, I'll try this. I'll see if this is better...
The layering of the meshes is what refracts the light enough to get the darker look to the glass. I also used a spectral setting which is in the mtl file.
#Produced by Art of Illusion 2.8.1, Fri Nov 05 07:07:54 SGT 2010 newmtl clear Kd 0.8455 0.8633 0.7654 Ks 0.94 0.82 0.6 Ka 0 0 0 d .312 illum 1 Ns 120
That is the mtl file for the triangle. I used the same texture for all the triangles as I am trying to get rid of the mirror finish, but keep the illumination throughout the layers.
This is the result of the layers with color glass...
This is the result of a test I did with the same mtl settings, but I added a gray texture to the bottom triangle. It didn't turn out so well, so I took out the gray texture for the next test.
This is the last test, with the mtl file settings. I am getting closer to having a frosted look, except for the mirror finish, which I am having trouble removing without removing the light passing through all 3 of the triangles.
You can start to see through the triangles in the last render, but until I can remove the mirror finish without taking away too much light, I have a unique mirror.... That is what my experiments have produce so far. It's just alot of messing with the mesh, and mtl file of an object.

Re: my bathroom
Chris,
It's people as patient, inventive, resourceful and generous as you, that can make such renderings.
Now, in order to make a "tutorial" of this kind of VERY-advanced made-easy tricks, we (you) have to perfect them before you can share them.
Like you, I started using SH3D as a beginner. My interest is more towards architecture, but you and db4tech seem to prefer "rendering light" as your specialty.
Together we might make a great program even greater. Cheers! Emmanuel!

Re: my bathroom
It's good to have different minded people working on the program.. That way, it is well rounded.
db4tech I think is more to learning how to get the renderer to be more photorealistic, while I like to make glass look better... My fascination with light is only to learn how to get it to scatter enough to mimic frosted glass, and/or colored glass. I have a house with a beautiful stained glass window that I have in mind to design, but of course I first have to wait until it is possible..
