Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

I have used the split wall command and the wall is indeed in two parts but I cannot work out how to separate them. If I select the first part and go to Modify Walls and change the end point, the start point of the second part moves with it. Conversely if I change the start point of the second part, the end point of the first changes. Basically, the two parts are not separate.

Of course I have also tried having one section selected and dragging the end of the section away from the other.

I tried having one section selected and reversing wall direction, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

I tried selecting both and and seeing if you needed to do split wall again, but the command isn't there anymore.

What am I missing?

Re: Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

You can select one portion of the split wall and Edit > Cut then Edit > Paste. It will reappear where it was originally, but no longer connected to its other portions.

If there is an easier way, I'd love to know too.

Re: Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

I ended up splitting the wall in three pieces and deleting the middle one. Then I pulled the two ends to where they should be.

Stupid that a hack like that is necessary. There is also no Join Walls command but that seems to have been a requested feature for 15 years or so

I use that "hack" quite often and it has never been a problem. It's a very easy way to have two walls perfectly aligned but with a gap in the middle.

There is: select two walls and right click. Select "Join walls". If the function doesn't appear in the context menu or the join fails this means that two the walls are either already joined or can't be joined because of a weird angle between the walls. This can happen when you try to join curved walls.
You don't have to move the wall ends close together, if it is mathematically clear then wall ends that are far apart can still be joined. If the wrong ends join then ctrl+Z to undo, move the endpoints closer together, and try the join again. The two ends that are not joined and are closest to each other will join.

Re: Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

1. I use the same method when I need a single wall in place of a splinted wall.
2. Not one but two:
-one in the default program: Plan->Join Walls (Ctrl+Alt+J)
-second (if you have installed Advanced editing plugin): Plan->Connect walls.
Both need to have at least 2 walls selected.
Look similar but each have also some different results.
Generally will connect the end of the first selected wall with the start of the second.

Re: Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

Not sure what you are doing wrong: select the TWO non-connected walls you want to connect. A right click opens a context menu that should have the "Join walls" command.
Another way is what dorin described but again: first select TWO walls. Then use one of the two functions under the Plan menu: Join and Connect ('Connect walls' only if you have the Advanced Edit plugn installed).

The two functions (join and connect) under the Plan menu act a little different and depend on which walls is selected first to determine where the connection is made. The Join function from the context menu extends both walls and connects them where they intersect.

Are you using some ancient version of Sweet Home 3D where this function was not implemented yet? The latest version is 7.5 and with two walls selected the Join functions should be visible.

Re: Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

When you split a wall will result 2 connected walls.
So, on your operations you've selected 2 connected walls and that's way the Join walls doesn't appear.
The selected walls IS already connected.
The Join walls or Connect walls make a new connection, don't remove an existing one to make a single wall.
Sample:
Draw 3 connected walls in an U shape (|__|).
Select the middle one and split it in two (|_ _|).
Delete one of the new walls, let's say the left one (| _|).
Select the remained wall and the first wall (| _|) then right-click and Join walls.
Will have to result back (|__|).

Re: Split Wall, how to separate the two ends

It sounds like the two wall segments are still joined at their endpoints. After using the Split Wall command, try selecting one segment, right-clicking the end, and choosing Disallow Join. Once the little join symbol disappears, you’ll be able to move or stretch that section independently. Repeat for the other end if needed—this should let you separate and adjust both parts freely.

"Disallow Join"? As far as I know there is no such command in Sweet Home 3D. When you split a wall the walls are joined at the splitpoint because that is how you are most likely to use it. If you want a segment to disconnect you select that segment and cut/paste it, simple as that.

A disconnect command on the splitpoint could be usefull since it will leave the other end connected (if it is). With cut/paste both ends are disconnected.
