Step 1: do everything dimensional in Sweet Home 3D
- Draw the walls from measured numbers, not from the estate agent's plan. Measure each wall at floor height and again at 1 m, because old walls are rarely square.
- Put in doors and windows with their real swing and sill height. Open the doors in the 3D view to check that none of them hits a radiator or a wardrobe.
- Use the furniture list to give every item its real width, depth and height. A sofa that is 10 cm too deep is what ruins most layouts.
- Check walkways in the top view. Keep at least 80 to 90 cm clear on main routes.
- Save one version per layout idea (v1-sofa-window, v2-sofa-wall) so you can compare later.
Step 2: stop asking the 3D view to answer style questions
The default textures and the light in the 3D view are fine for understanding space, but it is hard to judge whether a sage wall goes with your actual oak floor and the light from your actual window. Models in the 3D view tend to look cleaner and colder than the real room.
So once the layout is decided, take a wide photo of the real room, from the doorway, in daylight, and test the finishes on that photo instead: wall colour, floor, curtains, rug. A photo-based tool is one way to do this step. We make one, an AI interior design tool that restyles an uploaded room photo while keeping the walls, windows and layout. It keeps the structure of the photo, so you can compare, for example, a warm white against a greige on the same wall in the same light. It does not know dimensions, so do not use it for sizes. That is what step 1 is for.
What each tool is good for
- Sweet Home 3D: sizes, clearances, door swings, furniture counts, quantities for a shopping list.
- A photo-based preview: colour, material, mood, and how the room feels in its real light.
- A tape measure: the final check on anything you are about to buy.
- Export a few top views as images and print them. It is much easier to talk to a builder with a plan on paper than with a screen.
- Name furniture items after the real product (for example, "sofa 210x95 grey") so the shopping list is useful later.
- When you share a model on the forum for help, add the room dimensions in the post. People will answer much faster.
