Tips for Making Small Rooms Look More Spacious in Sweet Home 3D

Post by cedricvale »

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in how people approach designing smaller rooms in Sweet Home 3D so they feel open and comfortable without looking unrealistic.

When planning a small bedroom or living room, do you usually start with furniture placement, wall colours, lighting or window positions? I'm also curious whether using mirrors, lighter finishes and less bulky furniture makes a noticeable difference in the final render.

Are there any useful techniques or common mistakes to watch out for when arranging furniture in a limited space?

I'd appreciate any suggestions from people who have worked on small-room designs.

This is a fundamental question. Small rooms are a very challenging task. A large room forgives mistakes; there’s more air and freedom for a person to move around. In a small space, you need to think like a sailor inside his yacht. And you need to start with a precise plan. Draw all the cabinets. Open all the cabinet doors on the drawing. Try to open each door and not fall onto the bed)). That’s the only way. You need to start living inside the space that hasn’t been created yet. Walk around, sit on chairs, move a chair, and open the dishwasher. Find mistakes in advance. It really helps to take a tape measure and measure the chair, bed, and table in your actual room. Reach up to the top door and find the size that limits access to the upper cabinets. All of this helps create a real, comfortable space. And most importantly, small rooms should be very accurate in terms of the sizes of the items. Otherwise, the mistake will be obvious. My advice is to first make a list of the main items on paper, with accurate dimensions. Chair seat: 48 cm. Table top: 75 cm. The mattress height is 55 cm, the headboard is 88 cm. Install radiators under the windows; for some reason, people often forget about them, and they take up a lot of useful space. Open the doors and see where they hit. Are there any overlaps when opening two doors next to each other?
The curtains should be placed in front of the radiators; the fabric folds should be 12 cm. All of this needs to be arranged without any lies. A small room doesn’t forgive such mistakes. And there are many other aspects — there are no more or less important issues in a small apartment. All of this together makes the space comfortable and authentic.
In the ideal outcome, you can build your project and you won’t be ashamed. To do this, you need to be confident in the dimensions.

Thanks for the detailed advice. Measuring furniture accurately and checking door swings, cabinet access and radiator space are easy things to overlook when planning a small room. I especially like the idea of testing the layout in Sweet Home 3D as if you were actually moving around the finished space. It’s a good way to spot problems before making changes in real life.
