Forensic Police Custom Tools in Sweet Home 3D

Customization for the Forensic Police

eTeks is proud to report that the French Forensic Police Office (Scientific Police) recently chose Sweet Home 3D as a tool to design plans. This is a concrete application of the recommendation of the French government to give the preference to free open source solutions.
Before making this choice, the SCPTS (Service Central de la Police Technique et Scientifique, SPNS from 2021) requested some additional features and 3D models that will let them represent crime scenes but also exterior road scenes.

Sweet Home 3D features for the SCPTS

The request of the SCPTS led to the development of some features released in Sweet Home 3D version 6.0, like the articulated mannequin, multiline texts and new options for polylines. Beside that, five plugins were developed:

• The UpdateRoadLines plug-in adds the Tools > Modify road line style menu item to let the user choose a French road line style for the selected polylines and their color.

• The EvidenceMarkerGenerator plug-in adds the Tools > Add evidence marker menu item able to generate a numbered evidence marker on the item selected in the plan. Updated on 05/03/2021, the version 1.1 of this plug-in allows to enter numbers, but also letters (A, B, AA, AB,…) or a letter followed by a digit (A1, A2,…), and to change the label of the marker afterwards by modifying its name. Changing its material colors will also be reflected in the icons shown in the plan and the furniture list. Note that the version 1.1 requires Sweet Home 3D 6.5 or a more recent version to work.
  EvidenceMarkerGenerator plug-in
• The ExportPlanImage plug-in (released on 05/03/2021) adds the Tools > Export plan to image menu item able to export an image of the plan to PNG or JPEG format at the size of your choice.
• The BasicShapeGenerator plug-in (released on 12/12/2022) adds the Tools > Generate basic shape menu item to generate tetrahedrons, pyramids, cubes, crosses, spheres, cylinders, cones, hexagonal prisms, dodecahedron and torus at a given size.
• The StaircaseGenerator plug-in (released on 12/12/2022) adds the Tools > Generate staircase menu item to generate staircases of various types from their number of stairs and their size, with other additional customization parameters.

Additional 3D models and textures for the SCPTS

Carlos Folch, the author of Resources.blogscopia, also designed 195 new 3D models and 5 new floor textures to complete the list of existing free 3D models with additional vehicles, clothes, weapons, tools, road symbols and road parts.
These models were released in the SCPTS.sh3f library contained in the 3DModels-SCPTS-1.2.4.zip file (15.5 MB – translated in English, French and Spanish – updated on 08/21/2024), where they can be easily found with the “SCPTS” or “SNPS” keywords.

Like the other 3D models designed by Scopia, these models are available under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license, with the requirement of giving credit only in case a 3D model or a work derived from it is redistributed (see also Scopia license).
SCPTS’ 3D models are listed below to let you display each model in 3D by clicking on its image or download it by clicking on the link under the image. Some of these models are also available among Scopia models in the free 3D models page, except the ones surrounded with red. All of them can also be found in the free 3D models search engine.

The 5 new following textures were created for roads and are available under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license.

Note that the road models include different materials which can be hidden to get configurations with or without sidewalks or security rails, with continuous or dash lines, like in this example. Read the Road models guide (PDF – 9.6 MB – French) for more information.
