A Useful Tip for Scaling Imported Floor Plans Correctly

Post by cedricvale »

When recreating an existing room in Sweet Home 3D it is worth getting the scale right before drawing all the walls and adding furniture.

import the floor plan using Plan → Import background image.

choose a wall or another feature with a known real measurement and use it to set the image scale.

use the longest clear measurement available if possible because small errors are easier to spot over a longer distance.

after scaling the image check another known measurement elsewhere on the plan. if it does not match reasonably well the original image may be distorted or the measurements may be inaccurate.

draw the walls over the image and enter the correct wall thickness and height rather than relying on the picture alone.

once the basic layout is correct add doors and windows then check their positions against the original plan before placing furniture.

this saves time because an incorrect scale can affect room dimensions furniture fit and the final layout. it is much easier to correct the background image at the start than to adjust the whole project later.
