SH3D Crashed in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
I'm running 11.04 (natty) on a Dell Inspiron system. SWH3D crasshed reaptedly until I:

a) Removed the proprietary AMD drivers.
b) Installed libgl1-mesa-swx11

It now will start up OK, and will do some things, but if I try to open the preference menu it crashes immediately.

Please read the FAQ Sweet Home 3D crashes when I want to edit preferences, print, create a photo or create a video. What can I do?

Barry,

The problem definitely doesn't lie with Ubuntu. I'm running SH3D on a Ubuntu computer for several years without problems.

Check your video drivers. They're the most likely source of the problem. If possible, try a 100% standard installation of Ubuntu. That's what works best for me.

Weeeelllll, the section of the FAQ titled "Sweet Home 3D crashes when I want to edit preferences, print, create a photo or create a video. What can I do?" says:

Click on this link to launch a version of Sweet Home 3D which avoids this test and disables the features depending on offscreen 3D images.

Unfortunately the link doesn't do anything but open a Java download page, claiming I guess that Chrome isn't java enabled. Which seems highly unlikely cause every other page in the Internet works fine.

Can anyone point me to a link that doesn't require java to open?

How did you install Sweet Home 3D?

Re: SH3D Crashed in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
OK, initially downloaded the TGZ files from here and expanded the folder; ran the program via the SweetHome3D shell script in the SH3D folder.

That obviously didn't work for me, so I nuked that folder, and the downloaded TGZs, and installed via the Ubuntu Software Centre. That install refuses to even show a splash screen.

Uninstalled that, and I'm now re-downloading the TGZ files and giving them another go.

First up the 64 bit version: I choose RUN or RUN IN TERMINAL - nothing happens. (I've got a dual core 64 bit AMD box)

Did you check your video drivers?
I also suggest you uninstall all kinds of Java on your computer.

Re: SH3D Crashed in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
Once you downloaded and expanded the tgz file, please edit the SweetHom3D script and at the last line, replace:
-Xmx1024m
by:
-Xmx1024m -Dcom.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.checkOffScreenSupport=false

This will have the same effect as the JNLP file available in the FAQ I previously mentioned.

For whatever reason, the 64 bit version didn't work, but the 32 bit one does after adding the above mentioned line to the script and everything seems to work fine!

Re: SH3D Crashed in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
Aha! Turns out I'm running 32 bit Ubuntu - duh...
Reinstalled the AMD drivers, and the program once again crashes.
