Grainy photos

Hi

Great program, fun to use, I have a problem though. When using shine tiles the light (white light source) falls on the wall being both too strong and grainy. Moving the lights doesn't really solve the problem because, though the dots may be gone, but the part of the romm that should be light gets dark.

here's a picture:

Any suggestions?

Re: Grainy photos

This is called "noise". The easiest way to reduce it, is to reduce the size in pixels of the image once computed. Any modern image editor will do that correctly.

Re: Grainy photos

In regard to the room being too dark, as I understand it SH3D doesn't fully trace light bouncing around (this makes it fast). This means that some scenes will render too dark.

What you can do is place some extra light sources in the room to make up for the lack of bounces. For example, I have a similar situation to you and I'm currently experimenting with placing 4 or 5 small 30 cm light sources 1 m back from the end of the room, each set to 5% output. You could also use large 0.5 to 1m light sources placed behind the virtual visitor at perhaps 20% to project light into the scene (making them big to avoid point reflections).

So basically you have to paint-with-light to achieve an approximation of real lighting. I speed up the experimentation by rendering very small until the lighting is right, then I render large to get detail.

I'm still climbing the learning curve on this subject. I think if you search through this forum you will find other discussions on lighting. People who have added supplementary light sources have achieved some very impressive renderings.
