In the case of Mac OS X, it requires to install Java 6. If you don't want to install it, then don't use the portable version.

A free version bundled with Java doesn't exist under Mac OS X yet, but I really don't see the problem to install Apple Java 6. Mac OS X 10.9 used to propose to install Java 6 after user confirmation, while Mac OS X 10.10 makes it less easy by sending the user to a page where he can download Java 6. Installing Java 6 won't put your computer at risk, since it can be used only for applications and not for applets in web browsers which encountered some security problems in the past years. I could bundled Oracle Java 7 or 8 like I did for the Mac App Store version, but creating one application able to switch between Oracle Java and Apple Java depending on the environment isn't easy. Maybe in the next version...
