cannot seem to start a new plan
I just downloaded Sweet Home 3d, and uploaded a hand drawn really basic blueprint as a background image - as per the user guide.
I put in the real life number of inches - 5 1/8", then say what the point of origin is - a corner of the plan, since I wasn't quite sure what "point of origin" meant.
Then finish.
and nothing happens. I don't see the plan anywhere. I've tried it twice, and zip. tried different points of origin. Where is it? can I even check to see if something is there? if just the basic image was uploaded, as it seemed to be?

5 inches is still small and I have some doubts if this is really the length in real life of what you measured. Try a higher dummy value to see if it works better then adjust to a more realistic value.

ok, so is the "real life measurement" the size of the "box" as it is in the blueprint? or is it the actual size wall to wall of the house? That's what confused me. They are both "real life"..

By "real life", it means the "size wall to wall of the house" in your case. I'm not English speaking native, so if you have a better expression than "in real life", feel free to propose it here. It could avoid confusion for future users.

When using a background image, you have to make a connection between the size of the image, and the size of your design in SH3D. Step 1 - select and import the image Step 2 - select (in your mind) a line in the image of which the actual length is known (or of which you can be reasonably sure, e.g. length of a bed) Step 3 - use the adjustable line in SH3D (under Ubuntu it's blue, but colours may vary depending on your operating system) and align it with beginning and end of the line of known length (you can hold SHIFT to constrain the line to be exactly horizontal or vertical) Step 4 - in the top of the window enter the known length of the selected line. Step 5 - click NEXT
Concerning the point of origin: Imagine there is a lot of unwanted white space around your background image. You can determine where the image appears in the background if you click in the image, thereby changing the 0,0 point in your design. Experiment a bit and you'll find out it's easy and useful.

so it is not the reduced width (or length) of the item as measured in the blueprint, but it is the full width (or length) of the item as measured in "real life", as Puybaret said.
Puybaret, I would just make a reference to the full measurement in real life of the object, as opposed to the reduced measurement of the object in the blueprint (photo). Even if "real life" is not understood, the greater of the measurements is always going to be the actual size of the object in real life.
