Can I draw/paint/write something on the surface of an object?

I'm sorry, if this should be a trivial question, but I wonder:

How can I draw or paint something directly on the surface of an object?
Is it possible to create a rectangular bitmap or vector graphic and "glue" that on the surface of a cube or another object in AOI?

thanks a lot and kind regards

I guess you want that image to appear in the 3D view, right?
You could create an image with any drawing software (no need of AOI for that) and then apply it as a texture on a box found in the Miscellaneous category. See also this recent subject.

Re: Can I draw/paint/write something on the surface of an object?

@Puybaret: thank you very much for your quick reply!
I do have to apologize again - I think I formulated my question not very well:

Let's assume I have imported a simple cuboid with a given texture (wood), created by AOI and saved in OBJ format.
This would be a very simple dummy for a wardrobe.
To make it a little more realistic (without having to model each door and each plank as a single part in AOI), I wonder if I could paint some lines e. g. on the front of the box to indicate doors, handles, etc.

I could do this in AOI or in SH3D.

If I understand the linked discussion correctly, I could import a bitmap image as a texture for my cuboid. But would it be possible to apply it only to one of its six sides? Do I have to prepare the cuboid in some way in AOI to make it look different on the front than on its other sides or do I have to assemble it from 2 parts - a corpus and a front plate and give the front plate its own texture and material in AOI?

Re: Can I draw/paint/write something on the surface of an object?

Simple answer is yes. In SH3D you can apply a different texture to each side of a box (provided they are assigned different names) or apply one texture to the entire box (as the linked thread indicates).

With AoI you can do the same. Or, as long as the AoI object has different material names fo the different surfaces, you can later assign bitmaps to the named surfaces from SH3D.

In your case, the simple wardrobe cuboid, the simple workaroud would be using two boxes in SH3D: one the wardrobe itself, one very thin one with the doors that you place on the front of the wardrobe. You use one material for the wardrobe and one for the door. Then you can group the two objects to simplify moving it around later.

Re: Can I draw/paint/write something on the surface of an object?

@okh: thanks for your explanation!
So I got it right, that in AOI ONE physical part can only have ONE texture and I can not apply different textures/colors to the sides of the same cuboid?
Than I'll have to also model the doors - not a big deal, but I'm really a newbie and being used to "real" and expensive industrial 3D-CAD solutions, AOI is still a little difficult to handle for creating and positioning objects.

Re: Can I draw/paint/write something on the surface of an object?

Sorry, unsure how you would do this in AoI.

You could, of course, use commercial 3d CAD software too (as long as it exports to .obj, .dae, .3ds or .lws). Or you can try Blender, Sketchup or something else.

In addition, and maybe the easiest: you could draw your wardrobe in SH3D: make it a small room (with thin walls and possibly a box as top). Then you can "paint" each side as you like.

If you need the wardrobe again, just export it to .obj format and re-import it as your own model.
