New fetures sugestions

Hi all,

I am a system admin and I have experience with programming, but I am not coding anymore. I am here again to sugest development ideas, not to complain about SweetHome3D that is an awesome software, but there's always room for better.

I know that the sowftare is based on a 2D work sheet and you do everything in it. What I would like to see is a way to help yourself in 3D as well, so the software should have the capability to edit in both views. You do need a 2D view for blueprints and you can work most of the stuff in it, but you might want a 3D edit mode that you can also use to edit, but also to visualize the end idea and to render from it. The 3D walk feature is awesome and I don't have any sugestions about it.

What GoogleSketchup has is the 3D build feature where you can actually lift a wall as much as you like and it's giving you free control over it, so I would like to have that in SweetHome3D. Also another feature is the multi-level feature.

I would like it replaced as LAYER. The start-up default should be a BASE layer0 that has an reference height of 0. Each layer should have a properties dialogue where you can specify the height and the colour and also if the layer should be visible or not. Like AutoCAD. Like this you can turn off a layer of furniture for example and have only the empty walls inside. Like this, you can enable the base layer, the walls layer and the furniture. The ceiling layer will be declared not visible and you can see through the structure.

You should be able to use positive height displacements and negative ones to build fundations for example. When you create a NEW layer, you will specify the height relative to layer 0.

Also, when you put object to a layer, and you adjust the layer height, all the objects will reallign to the absolute height of the layer. When I create a room, I want to be able to specify the height of the base of the room separate. I could have a room with a specific floor height and another one with a different floor height. Also when I describe a room, I want to be able to associate a ceiling to it and describe the height of it, or I could create a seperate layer containing only ceilings as surfaces.

What I need is also a feature to draw surfaces and double click to have properties on. I want this property box to have 4 buttons alligned like NWSE in a cross and I want to click and declare the lift of the surface on the clicked side, so I can angle it. Also I should be able to specify an angle or a height in a specific direction. Like this, I should be able to draw ANY shape and build roofs with ease or terrain. Also speaking of this feature we get back to the 3D editing features where you could draw a shape in wireframe and when the shape closes, becomes surface. I can easily build roofs in GoogleSketchup, but not here. I like the snapping feature.

Also what I hit when using SweetHome3D is the triangular wall. You can easily build a trapezoid wall, or a riangular wall, but the "solid" part of the wall will always stay to the ground. I want to be able to have a triangular or trapezoid wall that "touches" the ceiling and the tip is upside down. Not sure if you understand, but I cannot describe it better.

If I can draw surfaces and I can lift them up in an angle and I have the reverse triangle for the walls, I can enclose a staircase, so I can do more.

I insist to have multi-layer features, so the software will change completely. It is a feature that can make the software really powerfull!!!

IF you want to implement the mentioned features, you will have to put a history reference software to go back to because new versions will not be able to open old files.

Well, that's about my feed-back. Hope you can make a good use of it...

Thanks for your suggestions.
Miserably, I believe you didn't discover all you can do with multi-level feature yet. You can edit each level, give it a negative elevation, and use it almost as layers (see this message). sad

I will try to explore the multi-level features more, but the triangular (trapezoid) wall features and the roof features are not there. These can be easily implemented.
