Window Openings

Hi,

Is it possible to create window reveals when adding windows to walls? For example the outer face of the wall has a window opening of 1000mm and the internal wall face has an opening of 1300mm.

Thanks.

Re: Window Openings

Vincent,

Of course you can. Took me about 10 minutes to make this example.

The colours are used to better show perspective. Note that for each size you will have to design a separate window, because if you scale the window, the chamfered (beveled) edge will not have the exact dimensions.
The sh3d file is here .

Re: Window Openings

Many thanks Hans,

Could you tell me how you created that, or point me to the documentation? I would like to create a chamfered wall opening and then put the window in the wall, this is because sometimes the window will only be 1000mm high, but the reveal will run from floor to ceiling.

One thing I did notice was that when I opened the sh3d file, I received a message to say that the sh3d file was created with a newer version of Sweet Home 3D, I am running version 2.6 and I thought this was the latest version.

Re: Window Openings

Vincent,

Indeed, I used v3.0 beta 14, but the sh3d file is compatible with v2.6: I didn't use any of the new features in this model. The beta version does not support some of the plug-ins .

If you open the sh3d file, you can see I used 4 triangles. The dimensions of the triangles determine the beveled edge and the height of the window.

After creating the model, I exported it as OBJ file and then re-imported it as a door/window. All pretty basic stuff which you can read here, here and here.

Thank you Hans, I knew one day that I would wish I had learnt Java.

Re: Window Openings

Vincent,

It's never too late. Emmanuel (the programmer of SH3D) has written a book on Java (in French). Buy it, and help yourself and Emmanuel at the same time!

Hans
PS: Since having learnt how to program in Basic (in 1983) I have had lots of time to forget everything about programming. Java is an Indonesian island, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Window Openings

Hi Hans,

I'm a C# developer, so I'm assuming the it shouldn't be too difficult :) I can speak French, but not to the level required to learn a new programming language, so instead of buying Emmanuel's books, I made a donation.
