Dividing wall thickness and "room vs walls"

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, so hello and many thanks to the developers for making this (apparently) great software.
I'm in the process of having a house built, and plan to use Sweet Home 3D to figure out different room layouts.
I have first drawn the outside walls of my house: OK.
Then I tried creating a room using the dedicated tool, but the result's walls have no thickness, and adding a door does not automatically "open" the wall on which I place it.
So it looks like I did not do it properly, maybe I should have created walls for my room instead?

What is the correct process:
A. create the dividing walls ("Partition" in English, correct?) only, after defining a different thickness from that of the main "outside" walls?
B. create the walls first, then add a room within these walls?
C. create a room first, then add its walls?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Re: Dividing wall thickness and "room vs walls"

It depends on the design which is easier: first walls, then the room, or first room and then walls.
First tunderstand that walls and rooms are two different object types. A room doesn't have walls by itself, you draw wall around a room or fill a space within walls with a room.

If you draw the walls first you can create the room inside by selecting the room function on the toolbar and then double click inside the walls. It will fill the space with a room object.

You can also start with a room by selecting the room function and drawing the room point-by-point. When the room is done select the wall function in the toolbar and double click on the room. It will surround the room with walls.

Then I tried creating a room using the dedicated tool, but the result's walls have no thickness, and adding a door does not automatically "open" the wall on which I place it.
You probably didn't use the walls function to draw walls. A wall should cut a hole if you insert a door or window that is defined as "Door or window".
Read the manual about drawing walls and then the section about drawing rooms .

Thanks for your advice, I'll check this after a one-week holiday.

Re: Dividing wall thickness and "room vs walls"

I'm back home, and I have tried both methods (room then double-click --> walls, and double-click inside a surface surrounded by walls). Both work fine.
Then I tried to increase the size of a room, by moving one of the walls. Dragging a wall as explained in the manual works, but the room is unchanged. Is there a way to "attach" a room to its walls so that moving one object (wall or room) is enough to modify the room size and shape?

Not attached but you can right click on the room and select 'Recompute room points' to redraw the room inside the walls. This is particularly convenient when you have moved doors in a wall.

"Recompute room points": OK, thanks.
When moving a wall, I would expect the enclosed door to move as well, but it doesn't.
No possible attachment either?

Select the door together with the wall and they will move together. Same if there are windows in the wall.
You don't want them attached because it would block the possibility to move the wall or door independently.
