Creating a room! After you create a closed space with walls (preferably connected), select room tool from tools bar and double click inside the space formed by walls. A new room with their surface will appear.

I suspect that you are trying to find where the area display is switched on/off in the modify walls dialog but the room is a separate object with its own modify dialog. Double click on the room and you get the modify room dialog. At the top right you see a checkbox where you can switch the display for the area on and off.
