Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
This house is really quite weird as it was based off of what I can remember of a dream I had last night.

It's currently still a work-in-progress as it is HUGE! Since all I can remember of the dream is most of the rooms on the first floor, I had to improvise the ground floor using the same basic dimension of the first floor. Wow what a mouthful...

All I've got in the way of pictures at present are screenshots of each floor's floor plan. No flooring, walls not painted, doors in place but no windows, and just barely started on the furniture.

Ground floor. I'll be designing the Great room into both a living room and dining room. All the rooms are labelled. You'll also notice the large open area in the middle; it's an Atrium. At present, it's a big open hole.

First floor. Here's the floor that was in my dream last night. As you can see it is quite weird (at least I think so, I don't know if it's weird to anybody else). Yes, that's a very large Nursery there on the left; I believe it's both a baby's bedroom and playroom rolled into one. Plus, it also looks to me like it can be partitioned off later to make two separate bedrooms.

I realize that there's this really odd nook there next to the Nursery. In my dream, it was just an open area that I was claiming as my "sewing room".

I have no idea why I was dreaming of this; it happens sometimes though.

I have done up the Great Room. It has however now put this very large house into the "WAY TOO BIG FILE" category. sad

I've decorated them while being tired; not a good thing. Not that the room doesn't look good, but that it looks rather cluttered in some places and completely bare in others.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I've been working on the kitchen today. I think I have it the way I want it, generally.

I've added a double door from the kitchen to the family room which wasn't noted on the floor plan screenshot in my original posting of this thread. That is what I have the Virtual Visitor standing in front of looking into the kitchen here. I've got one of those corner breakfast nooks there on the left with extra seating around it. Also there on the left (with just the corner of it showing) is a bookcase, for the cookbooks and such that can be useful in a kitchen. biggrin For some reason the color didn't come out right on the vintage stove I put in; it's supposed to be mostly white, but came out checkered in the rendering. Oh, well. There's the refrigerator to the left of the folding doors that lead into the Great room. I have a nice big island there in the middle with bar stools for even more seating. On the right is a row of pantries and additional storage. Just out of shot on the right is the double doors leading to the small atrium area.

This is from the opposite corner from that first shot (I've got cabinets behind the Virtual Visitor). The front edge of the vintage stove is just visible on the right. The sink and dishwasher are now visible on the island. Both the double doors to the family room and the double doors to the atrium area are visible here (these areas appear dark because I haven't worked on them yet and as such haven't added any lights in either of them). A slightly better view of the pantries there to the left of the double doors, and the bookcase to the right.

Also, I'm thinking of having the dark wood flooring throughout the house, with the exception of the bathrooms and possibly the bedrooms... maybe even the nursery area upstairs...

This house is still a work-in-progress; when I get more done I'll post more on it. smile I did work on the ground floor L-shaped hallway but because it's so bare I didn't think it worth taking pictures of. I added the flooring and the paint as well as the windows on the left sides at even intervals.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Very nice layout

I would use the open centre space as an "atrium" with pond and plants?" with a staircase, and a landing, thus moving all rooms to the outside. The long outside hallways would be perfect if on the inside, surrounding the open "atrium"(clear glass panels all around for ground floor. and glass balcony for upper floor walkway looking down onto "atrium".

I kinda like your design.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
bdfd thank you for the encouragement. As for the lights, the rooms would be really dark when I render them, as below can attest. laughing

JUGGERNAUT thank you for the suggestions; they are all very good and I might try them out. I don't feel offended concerning your ideas as when I said dream I meant "nighttime subconscious visions" and not "fantasy". It was just a weird dream with the details being only of the upstairs bedrooms (NO BATHROOMS, YIKES!) and who was there. biggrin

As a matter of fact there was no central atrium in the dream that I recall; it was actually that I couldn't figure out what to do with that space when I was trying to figure out the bizarre layout.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I've taken another look at the house and have made some changes (after saving as a second file).

Screenshots of the new arrangement, both floors. As you can see it's still a long way from completion, and the atrium area is now gone. Not only that, but it is now quite rightly named a "Double Jack-And-Jill".

A new look at the Great room. I've moved the Study to where part of the atrium had been and opened up that area to extend the Great room. That area is now an area to watch TV separately from the main area but yet still a part of it... if that makes sense. I was thinking that with so many people living in this house that some would want to watch TV while others might night, but would still like to be in the same general area.

Also, I changed the layout a bit on the next level enough that I could open it up to look down into the Great room. I don't but I think it's pretty interesting. Maybe I should put another staircase leading up to the next level near the extra seating area?

A small disclaimer about the fireplace (as seen in the second picture): I didn't see a texture that I could use for the extension (the part that is now exposed because of the opening of the next floor) that was similar to that used in the fireplace so they don't quite look the same. I did think of maybe just making the extension the same as the wall color but that looked even worse.

I also moved the breakfast nook out of the kitchen and into the rest of what had been the atrium area (I'm still working on this) which meant I had more room for storage and counter space. In moving the breakfast nook out of the kitchen also saw my need to adjust what was already there - as well as adding another ceiling light since the pendant that was over the breakfast nook left the room with the breakfast nook. laughing

Thank you for the compliments.

I realize that there are rooms that don't have any windows; some because they don't have an outside wall to put one in, some because I haven't gotten to working on the rooms yet. I, too, like a lot of natural light, but sometimes it's not easy to get it.

Also, another update. I've also added a 2-car garage. I figure it needs one, not to mention somewhere to do the laundry; unfortunately I ended up putting it into the garage.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
It took a good portion of my day, but I got the rest of the ground floor completed! biggrin

Screenshot of the ground floor. As you can see, it's completed, even the 2-Car Garage is done. Those little things added outside the Great room (top right) are the water heater - enclosed for its protection - and an HVAC. I forgot to add them to the design and had to add them somehow, although I'm not sure I added them in good places.

The Study. There's lots of shelving for books and whatnot, there's a desk for writing at, and two desks with a computer.

The ground floor bathroom. Very roomy.

The first Bedroom on the ground floor. Sparse but roomy. The bed has storage underneath.

The second Bedroom on the ground floor. All the furniture is a copy from the first bedroom. Also sparse but roomy.

The Family room. Lots of seating, easy access to the kitchen, all seats have a great view of the TV. biggrin

And lastly, the 2-Car Garage. You can see the storage units and the laundry area. The garage door is just out of visual to the left.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I've done a little "tweaking" of the ground floor. Hopefully, this will be the last I make changes to the ground floor and just concentrate on the top floor from here on...

Disclaimer on the following pictures: The file has gotten SO HUGE (about 126.2 MG!!!), so instead of the best rendering I've had to settle for the next best rendering, which has made the pictures really quite grainy. I think next house I need to NOT use the items I find on 3D Warehouse as they tend to be quite large. sad I also had another picture I was going to use to show the dining area of the Great room but didn't have that good of an angle of it; when I went to retake the picture I wasn't able to render it due to the file's size, hence the screenshot instead. These are likely to be the last pictures I'll be able to render since the file has gotten so huge. Any further pictures I will post from screenshots instead.

In the Great room, I took out the chandelier and added other light sources, both on the upper floor as well as the ground floor. Also, instead of using a half wall as a railing on the upper floor I've put in a wooden railing. I felt the paint color I'd had on the walls didn't work with the furniture (well, I could've change the color scheme with the furniture, but I like green... a lot biggrin), so I changed the walls - and ceiling - to a mustardy yellow that seems to have rendered more beige than yellow. Whatever, it still works, even in the screenshot. I changed the staircase so now it has closed treads and only the railing on one side (only need it on one side in my opinion), now there's a small closet under them. Yes, I realize that no one would be able to get into it when the back door is closed - or out the back door when the closet door is open - but what can I do? laughing I also switched the "English secretary desk" (not the name I came up with for it; that's what it was called on 3D Warehouse as I recall) with the curio cabinet, added a second curio cabinet and moved the small dresser to be in between the two curio cabinets. On a minor note, I changed the pattern on the rug under the dining set as well as the texture on the seat cushions on the dining chairs, and added a vase with flowers and a bowl on the dresser near the stairs. I also took out the half wall around the TV area and moved the bookcase back against the couch - basically making it more of built in unit. Oh, and I added a table and lamp to the TV area.

The hallway I also repainted since it is open to the Great room. Once again, no pictures of the hallway.

Also repainted the Study. Didn't need to but I wanted to.

Repainted the Family room, since it's open to the hallway I figured it would look weird keeping it a different color from the hallway. I also added an Art Deco grandfather clock - the face of which didn't render very well. You can also see something new out the window; I added the half landing stairs up to the balcony. In doing so I had to take out the second window on that back wall; replaced it with a picture.

I also started on the top floor. Just like with the Great room overlook, I replaced the half walls around the balcony with wooden railing - except for where the stairs let out onto it of course. I also changed out the french windows for double doors - just like the ones on the ground floor. I haven't taken a picture of it yet as I still haven't worked on the exterior of the house.

The Sewing room. It could be used as a crafting room, or another study, whatever is needed.

That's it for now; I'll post screenshots as soon as I get more done.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Okay, I figured since I mentioned what I had done with the Balcony, and teased a bit of it in the picture of the Family room, I thought I'd take screenshots of the back of the house in its present condition.

Both are taken by the Virtual Visitor viewpoint; the first is straight on, the second taken from an angle.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Thank you; it is quite a lot of work going into this monster of a house.

I was thinking more along the lines of hiring a window washer every other month to do it. laughing

Anyway, I've been able to work on more rooms. Actually I'd already started on them yesterday, but completed them today. I also had a brainstorm about how I can get good quality rendered pictures... once I had them done to my satisfaction I copied the room (or rooms) I had been working on onto a new file! Voila! Really nice pictures! biggrin

The Master Bedroom. It's large enough for a small sitting area and a bookcase. You'll notice the double bifold doors there in the second picture... that's to the Walk-In Closet. I just noticed an "oops" in that second picture; I forgot to change the heights of the different doors! sad I'll have to fix that...

The Walk-In Closet. Very nice, lots of room here! smile I might change out this arrangement for another one, but this is fine for now.

The Master Bathroom. Double sinks, corner cabinetry, its own linen closet between the shower and bathtub. Above the toilet is a cabinet with additional towel racks.

Now onto the two Jack-and-Jills. I'll list them starting with the ones closest to the Master Suite. They're pretty much mirrors of each other as they have the same furnishings. I've taken the pictures of the bedrooms from their doors to the hallway. The only difference is that the "Jills" are for adult females - with double beds - and the "Jacks" are for minor boys - twin beds.

The first "Jack".

The Bathroom between the first "Jack" and "Jill". The first picture is taken from the door to the first "Jack", the second picture is taken from in front of the one sink in the corner, and the third is taken from the door to the first "Jill".

The first "Jill".

The second "Jill".

The Bathroom between the second "Jack" and "Jill".

And finally, the second "Jack".

Right now I don't have the Nursery completed. I have an idea of what I want in there - one side for the cribs and changing stations, the other half a play area and sitting area - but I'm not sure how to arrange that yet. I'll figure that out... biggrin

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I realized earlier today that there's no bathroom easily accessible to the area designated "Nursery". I could've put a door that would access one of the Jack-and-Jill bathrooms, but then in thinking once the child/children started to grow up then that would be one crowded bathroom. So, I came up with the following:

Revised floor plan for the top floor. I took out my sewing room and replaced it with another bathroom, bringing the total number of bathrooms to FIVE! Wow, that's a lot of plumbing... I also split the Nursery area into what could later be two bedrooms (a grand total of NINE bedrooms! Oh my goodness!); see, they have closets! laughing Anyway, right now I have them listed as a Nursery and a Playroom.

The new Bathroom. Similar layout to the Master bathroom but without the shower stall and the linen closet - there's a cabinet for that instead. I'm looking at that area between the toilet and the sink and I'm thinking that maybe I might add a small cabinet there...

The Nursery. I have it set up for two babies, but I have no idea how many babies there might be, if any at all. Since this was part of a sleep-dream, as I recall I had seen two cribs in it and just went along with that. biggrin

The Playroom. There's a bookcase for both books and toys, a cubby area for cute storage bins and larger toys, a toy chest for the really big toys, and a rocking chair so that whoever is taking care of the child/children can sit and read to him/her/them. Oh, and some toys as well. smile

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Thank you, MartinSK. I'm usually not much for the contemporary look, but this seems to work out pretty well.

One thing was bothering me though, in the Great room. I really felt a set of stairs in the front part of it would be needed, but couldn't figure out how. I made a great sacrifice, and took out the fireplace in order to do it. sad

I apologize that it isn't rendered but a rather a screenshot of the Great room.

So, I just copied the staircase in the back area, moved it forward, added walls, moved the closet from under the back stairs to under the new front stairs, and lastly adjusted the wooden railing on the top floor. Because of adding the stairs to the front area, the sofa layout wasn't working very well, so I switched the placement of the 3-seat sofa with the 2-seat sofa, and changed the angle somewhat of the 3-seat sofa. Also, as you can see, I added some more windows on the top floor. Other than that, there's no further changes. biggrin

I also thought of a way to put the sewing room back in... kind of... it's something I like to call a Hobby Shed... biggrin I think that would be for another thread.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Alright, I think I have the house done as far as I can get it, although there is no roof - I don't know what to do for it at present. Following, a whole bunch of pictures.

I've taken screenshots of the ground floor rooms - I changed the ugly greenish yellow back to the blue I'd originally had the rooms.

The Great Room, from different angles.

The Study.

The Kitchen, from four different angles.

The Breakfast nook, from two different angles.

The Family room, two different angles.

The two ground floor bedrooms.

The Ground floor Bathroom.

And finally, the 2-Car Garage.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I've gotten the roofing on; just a very basic one.

I also had a bit of inspiration for a small change to the entrance as you can see. At first, I wanted to add the same high windows to the front of this house, just like the ones in my "Hobby Shed"/"Couple's Cabin", but that looked very odd on this house. So, instead I added the row of windows over the door. Then I thought about how I wanted to decorate the outside, looked at some Tudor style homes (all lovely but not much that is doable with this home) and found that some of them had this extension in the front. That's what I added. I extended the front enough to fit the front door, the two existing windows as well as adding in the single windows that are at other places on the house. I also realized that maybe I should add the windows around the front staircase like the way I have them around the back staircase. And, voila!

Although, does anybody think that there might be something... I don't know... "off" about the front windows?

I also put a couple characters at the front and back (as well as moved one of the cars out of the garage) for perspective. biggrin

Now I think I'm done with this house. wink

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Actually, I have on back of the house an HVAC unit, right next to the back door (left side of the picture below). I don't know if this is a good spot to place it or not.

I have no knowledge of vent placement so if any of these designs do come to fruition (you know, when I win the Lottery or something) I would hire someone who knows. Same with electricity and plumbing, etc. Heck, that utility door visible in the above picture is for a space for the water heater, and I don't know if that's even a good placement either. laughing

I've only placed the furniture decoratively, mostly as a way of showing what I had intended each room to represent, not exact placement for this very reason. biggrin

And, thank you for letting me know how you feel, and I understand. blushing

bdfd, the idea of adding a skylight (or possibly more?) is a really good idea, but I don't quite follow "the white room"... do you mean one of the bathrooms? So far in the Atrium version I've either painted the walls a pale blue or I haven't gotten to them yet. In the non-Atrium version I think I have one bathroom with white walls... Or do you mean the Atrium area? I'm sorry; I guess I'm really quite tired as it's been a long day and now 1:04 am PST.

I've gotten (I think/hope) the Atrium version of this house completed. Here's a small teaser as I've been working on it all afternoon. It's 2:00 am here and I'm very sleepy. biggrin sleep

The front of the house, half of the roofing over the main part of the house added (only enough to take this picture wink) If anybody thinks that there's anything that needs to be changed with what's here just let me know. smile

I've worked on the top floor and I believe I'll be able to get pictures (hopefully rendered, but we'll see) of the different rooms soon.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Alright, here goes; the final pictures of the Atrium version. biggrin This version I've actually turned into a TRIPLE Jack-and-Jill house.

Disclaimers: I was having a hard time getting the pictures rendered so most of these will be screenshots. All of the Jack-and-Jill bedrooms and bathrooms are the same layout, just different textures and colors used - oh, and the dressers are all different, and a bit of mirroring in their placement.

Seeing as I posted the screenshot of the front of the house, I don't need to show that again. wink

Back of the house.

Main floor (Level 0) floor plan.

First floor (Level 1) floor plan.

Level 2, skylight.

Since I'd previously showed the rooms on the Main floor, I also don't need to show those.

The atrium, from the different double doors leading out to it.

Onto the next level! biggrin

The first bedroom right off the stairs. This was the only one I was able to render.

The first bathroom, from two different angles, that connect the first and next bedrooms.

The next bedroom.

The bedroom being used as a child's playroom.

The next bathroom, connecting the playroom and the nursery.

The bedroom being used as a nursery.

Bedroom number 3.

The third bathroom, connecting Bedrooms 3 and 4.

Bedroom number 4. (In my dream this was my bedroom; that's the reason for both the color scheme and the paisley bedspread - my favorite color and the print on my real life bedspread biggrin)

The Master Bedroom, two different angles.

The Master Bathroom.

The Master Bedroom's Walk-In Closet.

Alright, I believe that's it for the pictures. Enjoy. blushing biggrin applause

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Modifying this to become a Bed and Breakfast Inn is turning out to be quite a chore (an understatement in my opinion)... maybe because I've added another floor? Maybe I should start again on this idea - without the new floor, or maybe I should just forget the whole idea and scrap this file?

At present, I've got it to the point it's an even bigger "monster" than my Tudor Castle Rethink (134.3MB compressed!), and I've only really done work on the main floor (and still have a ways to go to be complete with it) and got the basic outline for the new floor!

Front Aerial screenshot.

Back Aerial screenshot.

As you can see, I didn't even clean up those two screenshots - firstly because this project is still in a horrible work-in-progress condition, secondly because I didn't want the program to seize up like it did when I got the screenshot for my Tudor Castle Rethink, and lastly because I'm tired. laughing

If anybody wishes to take a look at this behemoth of a project, you're welcome to do so and I've added a link to the file below. If anybody has any suggestions on any other improvements/modifications, I'd be happy to hear it. biggrin

Thank you, bdfd; that was basically what I was thinking of doing for the top balcony but couldn't get the file to work for me very well due to its size. I was also wanting to have the middle section there all windows, making it almost into a closed-off balcony.

I'm just sad that the file is too big for me to continue working on it. crying I hadn't been able to finish off the owner's suite (the back part of the main floor closed off from the lobby area), let alone do much more than add the front and rear staircases.

One lonely thing to do, delete all furnitures inside.

In all my projects I make two files, One empty file lighter for external views and an another file, full with all furniture for internal views and if it's too heavy again, I do a file by level...

So try this. cool

I've taken your advice to heart, bdfd, and started a file for interior pictures leaving the master file unfurnished (mostly) for exterior pictures. I did leave in the lights, and kitchen and bathroom built-in items.

It has 15 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms - the extra bathroom is the public use one.

Disclaimer: I haven't changed the font size after labelling the rooms, so I apologize in advance for any squinting that's involved with trying to make out what's written.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Thank you, Miker777. I have been working quite a bit on the Bed & Breakfast version of this project. I now have four files for it: one master file with all levels and no furniture (except for what might be built in like in the bathrooms and kitchen as well as lighting and staircases), and one for each floor separately furnished.

I just got through getting the rendered pictures of the furnished main floor.

The main room - lobby, check-in area and dining room - taken from near the short hallway to the public restroom. The white doors visible are to two of the three staircases. The blue double doors in the back are to the third staircase and to something like a swimming pool, lounge area, more tables, maybe a bar.

I realize that there is no elevator for customers to take up their own luggage, so I think there's very likely to be valet to help with that. And since anybody would only have to, at most, walk up two flights of stairs an elevator would seem to me to be too much. biggrin

Another view of the main room, taken from the back staircase. Near the entrance (it's kind of hard to see) and on the other side of the check-in area is the short hallway to the public restroom. I have both salt and pepper shakers on each table, as well as glass containers full of maple syrup (since it is a Bed and BREAKFAST laughing lots of pancakes are very likely to be served). I think the corner curio cabinet might be filled with stuff from the area on display, kind of touristy in interest (I'm half asleep so I hope that makes sense).

I'm thinking of possibly having the place also be a restaurant for lunch and dinner, reserving the dining area for hotel guests for breakfast.

The check-in area with the lobby behind the virtual visitor. I just realized that there isn't a bell for customers to ring... The door on the left is to the short hallway out to the lobby and the public restroom. The three filing cabinets on the right are for record-keeping, and the tall cabinet on the left is for supply storage.

Public restroom, taken from the door to the hallway just off the lobby... and I just realized I made it neither male nor female but with multiple stalls (which are visible in this picture)... hopefully nobody complains, or I really need to get back in and somehow split it into two...

Public restroom, taken from the corner near the back stall.

The atrium, taken from the door to the main room. I also just realized that I could have put the same condiments from inside on these tables...

Another view of the atrium, taken from the swinging kitchen doors. One thing I really like about this area is that it looks like it's outdoors but isn't exposed to the elements.

The kitchen, taken from the swinging doors to the main room. Double set of wall ovens, two large stoves, extra wide service counter, and hopefully plenty of counter space for preparation work.

Another view of the kitchen, taken from near the wall ovens. Here you can see the two sinks, two dishwashers, two really wide refrigerators, additional large pantries and a smaller preparation space.

Living room/staff's break room (however you wish to call it), taken from the side entrance... and now that I'm really thinking about it, I probably need to completely change both the side entrance door and the door to the kitchen in order to accommodate a service entrance for bringing in the food... and I also just realized that there is no laundry facility in this design; I think it probably should either be in a separate building nearby, or it gets sent to a nearby cleaners...

Another view of the break room, taken from between the couch and chair... and maybe I ought to use a smaller entertainment center...

Private bedroom for the person (or persons) living on the property to keep an eye on the place... maybe as manager/maintenance/cook. This picture is taken from the door to the back hallway.

Another picture of the private bedroom, taken from in front of the closet.

Private bathroom, also used by the staff, taken from the door to the back hallway.

Another view of the private bathroom, taken from the corner next to the toilet.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Hi Aeowyn
Couple of suggestions, staying in small hotels 3 or 4 nights a week as i do, like now.
Linen would certainly be sent out, imagine the the amount from 14 or 15 rooms every day, sheets, pillow cases and uniforms (mainly from kitchen staff) would go elsewhere for cleaning.
Some sort of divider between the restaurant tables and the comfortable seating area, not necessarily a wall maybe some trellace and indoor plants or some screens.
If the downstairs bathroom is for staff, does it need the bath, the space might be better used if there were a small changing area for them with sinks and a toilet.
You mentioned no lift, bit of a struggle for the elderly or young, for the luggage maybe a dumb waiter just infront of the reception desk, rooms 106 and 206 would lose maybe 3x3 of space but they could be for single occupancy, and a lift would not look out of place alongside the porch on the outside of the building, its doors would only affect the storage cupboards on the upper floors.
As for the atrium area, beautiful, applause, i would certainly rather be there than in the restaurant i will be using in an hour. sad
Great job.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Thanks for the advice, Miker777. I'm currently working on the master file to accommodate several of the things you mentioned.

So having the linens sent out to be cleaned would be correct, but maybe I need to add a room for collecting the dirty linen? Possibly next to the "Owner's Living Room/Break Room"? I'll get a better look at that shortly.

I had already added a "sideboard" cabinet behind the couch, but maybe I ought to make it taller? Longer? Put larger plants on top of it? I'll have to take a look at it when I've completed the structural changes.

The downstairs bathroom is for both the "owner" as well as the staff, and as such I feel does need an area for washing (ie bathtub or shower stall). I will be, shortly, rearranging the "Owner's/Staff Bathroom to make it more worker friendly while still be for the "owner's" use.

I've added an elevator in the only place I could think of, where it might fit... I've taken out the one back staircase to add it. The wall does stick out a bit from it but I think that should be alright, I've cut into the two suites to give a little bit of room near the elevator doors, etc. Here's a screenshot of the back after adding the elevator.

You can also see the new elevator area from this front view.

I'll look into a possible "dumb waiter" near the front desk.

I'm currently working on making the Public bathroom into two; one for men and one for women. Hopefully it'll work out; we'll see. biggrin

The lift area appears to work well, didn't mean to add to your work load,i'm just led here bored. Back home tomorrow i can show some images of an english "coach house" i have been working on. As to storing dirty laundry, from what i have seen when the rooms are cleaned and linen is bagged up its arranged for the delivery driver to be there to collect it, but you would need to store a couple of days worth of clean linen somewhere.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I've worked for the past few hours (minus dinnertime) getting the changes done, and here's some screenshots so far.

Another aerial shot of the back, with the linen area included (far right). Oh, I forgot to mention the strip lighting I'd added to the top floor balcony! laughing

Here are the changes on the main level. The first picture shows the elevator and the changes made to the surrounding area. The second picture shows the new Linen Storage room; it's not very big but it does have the good amount of shelving for folded linens, and a laundry cart for easy removal for cleaning (and I made sure that it wasn't too wide to fit through the back door). You'll also notice in both of those pictures that I changed the flooring in the kitchen to be tile instead of wood. The final picture is of the private bathroom and the public bathrooms. Yes, there are now two public bathrooms (one for men, one for women), and there's a special (yet common) "toilet" for men... wink In the private bathroom, I've taken out the bathtub, put in a shower stall, and it's now in a closed off section for privacy. I've also put the toilet into its own stall, just like in the public bathrooms

And finally, the screenshots of the first and second floors where I put in the elevator shaft, as that was the only area that was changed. I did have to take square footage out of both of the suites to accommodate it but there was nothing else for it. Now both suites no longer have enough room for a sitting area and bookshelf. No big deal. smile I realize that the suites don't look like they're the same square footage, but they actually are; in changing the first floor I'd taken out the (I'm not sure how to word this right) "rooms" that marked each closet, but on the second floor I had no reason to touch that area. In other words, the only difference between the two is that the first suite is taking into account the square footage of the closets while the second suite is not... I hope I haven't confused anyone with that explanation... smile

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
Looking at your different designs, I am envious of how you can use atria. I would so much want one, but unfortunately, living at 60°N where the sun is low an atrium is mostly pretty much a waste of space.

Further South, though, some the of the most beautiful ones are arguably the Andalusian courtyards and not least the Moroccan Riads with plants, fountains and colonnades. Maybe inspiration for your B&B?

ok

Posted by AeowynFraser at Mar 10, 2017, 3:00:17 AM
Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I love the idea of atria; an outdoor space inside an indoor space. I live in a desert area in Southern California so an atrium could be possible, and a covered one most ideal.

And since I put each floor on its own file I've been able put so much in ( think the potted lavender is probably really big), that now I can't take rendered pictures, again! laughing crying I've taken screenshots of the main floor to give you an idea, and I'll try putting each room into a separate file in order to take pictures.

I've also changed the lobby area a little by extending the backboard and having it curve around. Oh, and I've added more plants to divide the spaces, as you can see below. I was thinking that the divider could also be used as storage for things like extra salt and pepper shakers, silverware, maybe tablecloths and placemats, that sort of thing.

As you can see, I've put in swinging restaurant kitchen doors, instead of basic double doors, to the kitchen. I figured that it was better for a business.

I've added salt and pepper shakers and syrup dispensers to the tables in the atrium, as well as the swinging doors. the narrow windows placed high up are to the public bathrooms, each window well above each stall (I'll get to their pictures last).

Here's the kitchen, the first picture taken from the door to the main dining area, the second from the doors to the atrium area and the break room. As I've never physically been inside a commercial kitchen I had to use my imagination (and what I've been able to see on television). I've put in two of just about everything; two double ovens, two stoves, two sinks, two dishwashers, two refrigerators. I think I've put in enough preparation space, as well as a place to put counter space for pick up by the wait staff.

Here's the Break Room (also the Living Room for the person/people living on the property). First picture is taken from the door to the kitchen, the second is taken from the door to the laundry storage room. You can see in the first picture the door that staff use to enter the inn; it's also the live-in's front door, as well as the door deliveries are made, mail is delivered to, that sort of thing. The hallway to the live-in's bedroom and the bathroom are visible in the second picture.

The Laundry Storage Room taken from the door to the Break Room.

Live-in's Bedroom. The first picture is taken from the door to the hallway, the second is taken from in front of the closet. I was able to put a queen size bed in there; plenty of room for a couple. I don't think I'd be able to put in two single beds though.

The bathroom for the staff and live-in(s). You can see the toilet stall on the left, the door to the shower area in the middle, and the door to the linen closet on the right.

Shower area. There's actually enough room for a person to be standing outside of the shower to dry off. I think a fan on the ceiling would be very wise in this room as I can't put a window in there.

The Hallway to the Public Bathrooms, taken from the door to the Staff Only area, looking to the Lobby area. Each of the public bathrooms are marked, and the last door is to the Check-In desk area. I need to find a sign that says "Staff Only" on it to put on the door behind the virtual visitor and to the Check-In area.

Now, for the Public Bathrooms. It's hard to tell from the pictures but the first one is the Men's Bathroom and the second is (of course) the Women's Bathroom.

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
It's been a while, as I was working on a sewing project, but I've been able to get rendered pictures of the first floor rooms.

Here's the area in front of the elevator. It's actually wider than it seems, as it measures about 6 feet by 12 feet. You can see the bit of hallway leading to the first set of rooms. There's a window just over the virtual visitor's right shoulder, and a small one hidden behind the elevator.

The enclosed balcony area, taken from in front of the doors to the stairs. Since this is on a separate file from the master file, I had to come up with a way to make it look like it's not on the ground floor, so I put two flat giant boxes outside painted with the cloudy sky. Unfortunately, in doing so, the area was rendered quite dark. That dark strip visible in the first window on the right is the part of the elevator shaft that sticks out from the rest of the building.

Screenshot of the enclosed balcony, to better see the furnishings.

Room 101. As you can see I've made it a single occupancy room (just so you know, the odd numbered rooms are made up as single occupancy and the even numbered ones are double occupancy, with the suites being the exception). Going from left to right: dresser next to the door with a television on top (visible in the full length mirror), small table and chair in the corner, the twin bed and nightstand, full length mirror, bathroom door, extra chair (vaguely visible bottom right), and closet.

Room 101's bathroom, taken from the door. The toilet is just out of visual bottom right. Also not visible is the shower head in the shower area, behind the shower curtain (and yes that is the same pattern as on the comforter and pillow shams in the room).

Room 102... And as I take a closer look at this picture I can see a small error in the wall paint (visible in the full length mirror). I'll take care of that shortly. Also going from left to right: bathroom door, closet, full size bed with nightstands, full length mirror, double wide dresser with a television on top.

I didn't take a picture of Room 102's bathroom. It's very similar to Room 101's bathroom, except the sink is on the opposite wall and out of visual. A picture wouldn't show much. I also didn't take pictures of the bathrooms to Rooms 104 and 106 for the same reason.

Room 103. Same layout as Room 101, just different colors.

Room 103's bathroom. Same as Room 101's, different colors.

Room 104. Same basic layout as Room 102 but of course different colors, and no window.

Room 105. Once again, same layout as Rooms 101 and 103, different colors, but this one had the window. And I just noticed that the dresser rendered badly. sad

Room 105's bathroom.

Room 106.

The Suite (Room 107). Double occupancy, but the layout is different from the other double occupancy rooms; the bed is queen size. Going from left to right: bathroom door, television stand, double closets, bed and nightstands, double dresser (which I see rendered badly).

The Suite's bathroom, the first picture taken from the door, the second taken from the corner near the shower stall.

I'll try and take pictures of the second floor soon, but only of the balcony, The Suite, and possibly the Suite's bathroom, only because the rest of the rooms are just like their counterparts on this floor. wink

I could keep the rooms varied in color as I do, or I could make them be all the same - in which case I'd have to choose which one color scheme to use. What do you think?

Re: Two-Story Double Jack-and-Jill Home
I am so devastated at the moment; my computer crashed on me yesterday without warning, and I lost a good number of the house designs I've been working on (not to mention other things I'd saved on it). The ones that I didn't lose were ones that I downloaded to MediaFire, but some of those aren't quite updated (I posted those there then made modifications, but didn't save the modifications). crying

So, it looks like some of them I'm going to have to start from scratch, and some I'll have to update, hopefully with the help of the pictures I've posted here and on Facebook as references. That'll take some time though.
