Atrium house
I'd posted on a previous thread (2-family house) several different projects I was creating. Well, one of them I've been updating the last couple of days: 20130728 Atrium. This is going to be a long post as I am including all of the pictures of all of the rooms as I have them so far.

For some reason this file seems much bigger than the other homes I've posted here (about 73MB), but since I took these renderings early (I'd done the work yesterday but took the renderings this morning after turning my computer on) and made them smaller than I'd done before (300 pixels wide as opposed to 700 pixels wide) I was able to get some decent shots.

Here's a screenshot of the floor plan. Unfortunately I had to snap it so zoomed out in order to capture the whole house, and the words are not easily read.

Front view from the virtual visitor point of view. I haven't painted the outside, added any fencing or put in any decorative elements. And yes, that's a tree growing out of the middle of the house. biggrin Also, I haven't taken a picture of the back of the house as I haven't worked on the patio area either.

The first room you come to is the main living area; Living room, Dining room and kitchen all combined into one space. I took two pictures of this space from two different points; first from the entrance to the hallway, second from one corner of the kitchen.

Speaking of the kitchen, here's a closer look at it from in front of the closet.

From the living area we head down the first part of the hallway. You can see the windows facing into the atrium on the right (as well as the corner of the bookcase in the living room) and three doors on the left (as well as the entertainment center in the living room); two bedroom doors and one bathroom door. At the end of the hallway you can see the door to the master bedroom. Not really visible is the bend in the hallway.

Through the first door is the first bedroom. The darkness on the left is the corner of the closet. I've also put a tall dresser and a bookcase in this room.

Next is the main bathroom. I put in a double sink vanity, which you can see the corner of the mirror of on the right.

Next is the second bedroom. Basically it's a mirror of the first bedroom.

Master bedroom. Not a very good picture, but I couldn't quite get a good angle on the room. The darkness on the right is the corner of the double closets, part of the dresser is visible near the back patio door (I have part of the patio partitioned off for exclusive use to the master bedroom), the green bit at the bottom is a corner of the large bed, and there are two wall lights but only one is visible.

Master bath. Not much to say; the picture I think is pretty explanatory. biggrin

Here's the rest of the hallway. On the right you can see the row of windows looking out into the atrium as well as the door to access the atrium. On the left you see the door to the small passageway to the back patio area, the door to the study and the door to the sewing room. At the end is the door to the laundry room.

View of the atrium taken from the hallway door. The picture isn't as bright as I would've liked it. I have the walkway covered with a wall mounted pergola all the way around. The doors to the living room area are on the right. You can see an outdoor table and chairs set under the tree in the middle. On the left side you can see one of the benches as well as one of the tables in the corner for additional sitting. Just barely visible in the middle of the picture, just past the tree trunk, is the door to the guest suite.

I did not take a picture of the passageway to the patio as it's just a blank, covered walkway.

Onto the Study. Doesn't look like much. On the right (just barely visible) is a set of bookcases. On the left (the brown wedge visible) is the shorter bookcase with a set of doors on either side. I have the printer on a rolling filing cabinet.

The sewing room. Just visible on the left is a corner desk which I have a sewing machine sitting on. There's also a computer chair just like the one in the study in front of the desk, but it's not visible in this picture. The small desk under the window is supposed to have a serger sewing machine on it but I wasn't able to find one on the 3D Warehouse website. The big white whale of a table in the middle of the room is a crafting table, full of nooks and crannies to fill with usable items for when crafting; it also stands so high as it can be used to lay out fabric to cut. Also, on the right you can see a door to a room not previously mentioned; the sewing storage room.

The sewing storage room. There's only one way in or out of this room and that's through the sewing room. There are windows however, they are unfortunately not visible. The dark line on the left side is a set of bookcases. In the middle is storage for all sorts of things useful for sewing; thread, zippers, buttons, ribbon, etc. The wardrobe on the back wall is for fabric storage, whether it has been folded up or still on their rolls. The storage on the far right is for sewing patterns. And yes, I purposely painted some of the pieces green; it's my favorite color and I wanted to do something different than "wood". biggrin

Laundry room. Just out of shot on the right, next to the cabinets) are the water heater as well as the HVAC unit. The cabinets on the right are for cleaning supply storage as well as coats and such as the door visible leads outside to a small covered walkway to the garage (the door to which is visible through the window). Under the window is, of course, the washing machine and dryer. Next to that is a table for folding clean laundry - it's actually a desk as it has drawers for storing little bits a bobs. Above the table is a cabinet for storing the laundry soap, fabric softener, and other useful laundry cleaning stuff.

Guest bedroom. Not much visible here. On the left (out of shot) is the door to the guest bathroom. The dark line on the left is to a bookcase, which is next to a dresser with a TV on it (behind the bookcase thus not visible). On the right is the closet.

Guest bathroom. The single sink vanity unfortunately isn't visible in the picture, and the mirror above it is only partially shown as the dark line on the left. Next to it is a storage unit for putting towels and such; I ended up using a bookcase as I couldn't find anything else quite right. And yes, the shower curtain has the same pattern on it as the quilt in the guest bedroom; I found it so nice I used it twice. biggrin The toilet is just partially visible under the window on the right side.

And finally, the 2-car garage. I put in two VW Beetles as I like this model. One is sage green in color (hard to tell as it is reflecting the color of the other car as well as the color of the garage door), and the other is in a turquoise blue. Visible is the same door that can be seen from the laundry room, as well as a wall of shelving for storage on the far wall.

Hi,

Waouh, it reminds me strongly one of my projects with a patio dating from August 2013 ... smile
At that time the patio was not covered.

Re: Atrium house
Nice! Yes, it appears to be very similar.

I kind of feel like I ought to explain where I got the idea for this house. When I first came up with the design of this house, I'd seen a TV show about ancient Roman houses (or at least a show that talked about them in passing) and it mentioned about the atriums in these houses, so while I was at work (for a company that sadly I had to move away from about 5 years ago) I doodled my fantasy Roman style modern house with an atrium in the middle. I'd not seen one like it before.

Here's my original doodles, using a notepad I'd had at my desk at the time. Really quite crude, but interesting. Also, the pencilled in changes were done much later.

Later, during a down moment at work I used the Word program to work on the same design; I didn't have access to a Paint program at the time.

Both of those sets of drawings were done prior to 2011. I had stuck those pieces of paper into my sketch book as a way of keeping my ideas all in one place. One day in 2013, I was going through my sketch book and came across these and thought about doing alternate take on it.

This is actually a page in my sketch book rather than a separate sheet of paper stuck in. As you can see, this is the version that I went with in this program - with a few minor changes. biggrin

I realize the rendered pictures of the different rooms are really small and the details so hard to make out, so I thought I'd add some screenshots (from roughly the same standing spot) of the same pictures - except for the front view and the floor plan.

If anybody wants to see different angles of any of the rooms please let me know. biggrin

Great ! smile

For an open kitchen i found this idea,:
I'm installing a movable partition, I can isolate the kitchen when making food or when the 2 TVs walk together ...

Before

After open

After close... smile

What do you think about ?

Re: Atrium house
I had a bit of down time (my internet anyway) so I went back and worked a bit more on this house.

I realized that I actually hadn't painted the outside (I hadn't painted the atrium area either) or added any outside lights! While in there I also noticed a few things that needed a bit of updating, adjusting and adding. Anyway, here's some pictures.

Front aerial view. I also added some bushes to the front facing.

Back aerial view.

This is what I used for the shingling on the exterior walls. For the atrium area and the walkway from the back door to the back porch I used the Beige roughcast with white stones I've used for most of my other projects.

Screenshot of revised floor plan (minus the roofing of course). As you can see I did not enlarge the letters but I think I might get that at a later date.

The Great room with views of the hallway on the left, a peek into the atrium area and a bit of the kitchen. I made the ceilings (throughout the entire house) textured white, changed out the small couch and armchair for a corner sofa (figured this house needed a little bit more seating space), made some adjustments to the lamp behind the sofa, added a round rug under the coffee table, switched out the vase on the dining table for my stargazer lilies biggrin, added some place settings, changed which side table I used near the atrium doors, made the fish tank look like the fish are actually swimming in water instead of floating in the air, changed the glass of the hanging light over the dining table from blue to beige, added a dishwasher into the island (not visible in this picture as it faces the sink), made the counter match around the sink, changed the refrigerator model and finally added another small upper cabinet above the vintage cooker. Phew that's quite a bit of change, and that's only in this one area. In the hallway I spaced the lighting out better and was able to actually remove a couple of them, and added some artwork.

I didn't take a picture of the first bedroom as the only change I made there was adding that one window near the closets. I also didn't take a picture of the second bedroom because there were no changes made at all there. The bathroom in between though is a different matter.

I realized I hadn't put any linen closets or cabinets in this house so that's what was added to this room (the big slab of wood visible on the other side of the towel racks).

Same issue with the Master Bathroom, but I wasn't too happy with the L shaped shower curtain I'd used, so instead of adding some cabinetry I added a linen closet at the foot of the bathtub (that's the door that's visible; the door to the the master bedroom is behind the linen closet and therefore not visible in this picture) and put in a regular shower curtain.

Just a minor FYI - I have the virtual visitor standing in the corner next to the toilet in each of these bathrooms. laughing

I also didn't take a picture of the master bedroom as all I added there were pillows to the bed.

Here's the little sectioned off part of the back patio from the master bedroom. You can see a couple lounging chairs, a table in between and some potted plants. I added the porch light after taking the screenshot of the floor plans as well as the back aerial view. I think I might need to add more lighting to the back porch area, at a later date.

No changes to the Study. One picture added to the Sewing room - near the door - but no picture taken there. No changes to the Sewing Storage Room, Laundry Room or Guest Suite.

The Atrium area. I realized that the tree was rather static so I found a picture for sassafras tree bark and added that to the tree trunk and branches then used one of the grass texture for the leaves (I tried using a picture from my search but it didn't work). I also changed the texture for the cushions for the chairs in the center table set.

Re: Atrium house
I realized after submitting that last post that I forgot to mention adding a couple of windows in the dining area looking into the atrium area.

Here's a closer look at the changes I made to the dining area.

And here's a look at most of the changes made to the kitchen area (except for the refrigerator as that sadly was out of frame when I took this picture).

For some reason the vintage oven rendered very strangely. sad

Re: Atrium house
I took another look at the front area (Living room, Dining room and Kitchen) and realized that there was just something a bit... off... about it. So, I've made a few adjustments... again laughing

I took this picture while standing near the front door (it's visible on the right). I felt that the flooring was just a bit too dark (I'd used the dark wood texture so go figure wink ) and changed it to one of the English parquet textures. Since I'd changed it in this area, I had to change it in the hallway, and after doing that I thought it just plain weird to have a different wood flooring in the Sewing room and Sewing Storage room so I changed it in there too.

I also changed the material used on the couch; instead of brown leather I have it in a blue fabric. The bookshelf near the hallway seemed a bit too narrow so I widened it up.

You can also see (somewhat) that I added porch lights to the atrium area as it seemed to be a bit too dark. I put one on either side of the wide porch doors from the Living room, one next to the guest room door and one near the glass door in the back.

The Dining room and Kitchen areas also had some changes, but those changes are hard to see from this picture.

Here's a better view of those two areas. I felt that the woodwork was just a bit too "matchy-matchy" so i changed the wood of the dining room table and chairs to the dark wood, found a picture online for English Walnut and used that for the kitchen cabinetry, island and bar chairs. I also didn't quite like how the upper cabinets looked so different above the vintage oven so I made some adjustments to all of the upper cabinets. First I widened the ones over the oven so that the met up with the rest of the cabinets, then I adjusted the heights of the rest of the cabinets so that they were all even with the ones over the oven (ie to the ceiling).

I then realized after changing the wood that I didn't like the marble I'd used for the countertops. First, I'd changed it all to the light blue marble seen on the island, which was alright. Then, I thought that the room needed a backsplash, I changed the walls in the kitchen to have the light and dark blue marble tiles. No, it wasn't my intention to make the entire wall the backsplash, it should actually only come up to the base of the upper cabinets (except for the wall behind the vintage oven; that I intended to have covered in the tiles), but I didn't feel like creating a half wall then try and insert it so that it shows and doesn't mess up the rest of the room, so let's just pretend that the backsplash on the wall above the sink stops at the base of the cabinets and a bare beige wall that match the rest of the area is seen above that. biggrin On the wall with the refrigerator the backsplash ends at the last of the upper/lower cabinets, right before the refrigerator. Below is the picture of the tile that I used for the backsplash.

After I'd taken the first picture and went to take the second it looked to me like the counters just blended weirdly with the backsplash and changed it (except for the island) to the dark blue marble.

Once again, the vintage oven and that curio cabinet didn't seem to want to render properly.

So, right now I'm working on getting a picture rendered from the kitchen and then I'll be working on one to show the lighting in the atrium.

Re: Atrium house
Love the idea of an atrium house, especially if the sun as high as it appears to be in your renderings. Here (60°N) maintaining the grass patch in the atrium would be quite a challenge...
..but I didn't feel like creating a half wall then try and insert it so that it shows and doesn't mess up the rest of the room, so let's just pretend that the backsplash on the wall above the sink stops at the base of the cabinets...
You probably know this, but a possible workaround for a backsplash up to base of cabinets is using a baseboard with tile texture on (sections of) the wall. ok

Thank you all for the support. smile

As promised, here are the additional pictures.

I did break down and added a short wall so that I could make sure that the backsplash ends where I wanted it to.

And once again, the vintage stove and the curio cabinet have rendered very strangely.

And here's the atrium, with the newly added porch lights.

Re: Atrium house
I figure I might as well add an update to this thread, since it's been some time since it was updated, as well as share the file for this house as it currently stands. It is still clearly a work-in-progress as there are still some additions and improvements to be made to this house. Then again, when is an "artist" ever really done with their work? smile

I'll also be adding updates to a few other threads as well, with a similar layout to this update.

20130728 Atrium

Aerial Front

Aerial Back

Level 0

I did not get a screenshot of Level 1 (as shown in the previous screenshot) because all that's there is the roofing walls; there was no room for an attic (I think).

And now, here's a whole new addition to this (I don't believe I had included it before); a larger version, based on my original hand drawings. It's still a work-in-progress - and I wasn't planning on sharing it until it was done - but I figured now's as good a time as any to publish it. If anybody else wishes to do anything with any of my files, you have my "permission". biggrin

20130728 Atrium Alt

As you can see, I've made my Atrium house into a ... should I call it a 3-in-1 house? You have the main floor house (no changes from the original Atrium house - before the changes listed above that is), top floor house (quite large though, maybe it can be used by a couple of families laughing ), and a small single-bedroom apartment above the garage (although now that I look at it, I think I ought to enlarge the double garage to one that can hold three cars (which would in turn enlarge the apartment, etc.). I still have quite a few things to work out on this one.

Aerial Front

Aerial Back

Main Floor - Level 0

Top Floor - Level 1

As with the previous version, the topmost level is roofing walls and there's nothing else, so no screenshot of it.

I am so devastated at the moment; my computer crashed on me yesterday without warning, and I lost a good number of the house designs I've been working on (not to mention other things I'd saved on it). The ones that I didn't lose were ones that I downloaded to MediaFire, but some of those aren't quite updated (I posted those there then made modifications, but didn't save the modifications). crying

So, it looks like some of them I'm going to have to start from scratch, and some I'll have to update, hopefully with the help of the pictures I've posted here and on Facebook as references. That'll take some time though.

I'm glad that I had both of these houses previously saved on MediaFire! I've been able to download them and have been working on them (updating the one-story and continuing to work on the two-story) for the past couple of days.

Since updating some of my previous houses in order to get the file size down on them, updating the one-story has gone fairly quickly. And just like my other works, I believe I've got it completed (until I decide to make more changes that is laughing ).

Here's a link to the two-story: http://www.mediafire.com/file/qmj8q0aubu2cy8u/20130728_Atrium_Alt.sh3d/file

As you can see from the file, I've got more of it "fleshed out" than previously (except for the landscaping which was already there from my previous work on it). I'm almost thinking on making it more of a dormitory style house than 3-houses-in-1, but as you can see it's still a work in progress.

Front Aerial. This is the only picture I've rendered of this house so far; let's just call it a sneak peak.

It's a house design from a book published in 1922! There are a few similarities to my design, and I'd never seen this until today! Wow!

Maybe I'll come up with another alternative to my version, with some more similarities to this one? laughing
