Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Hi, The beta test cycle will be different for this new version: before including any new feature, it starts with a Windows installer version 5.3 Beta 6 that should fix the bug some users encountered during program launch under some configurations of Windows 10 64 bit. Some of you might wonder why the Beta counter already reached the 6th iteration? As I couldn't reproduce this error on the Windows computers at my disposal, I chose to lead some private tests directly with a few users who had this problem to go faster and avoid bothering everybody. We tried with a full copy of the JRE, with the latest Java version 8u92, with some Java settings for DirectX / OpenGL, with Java 3D 1.6, and finally, this lead to downgrade Java to 8u51 that didn't cause these problems with Sweet Home 3D 5.0, as reported by some of you. As the bugs fixed in the Java versions released since 8u51 don't seem to be related to Sweet Home 3D features, it won't be a problem, and we'll stick on this version for a while (hope Oracle will end up to fix this regression). On behalf of Sweet Home 3D community, let me give them some warm thanks for their patience during these tests ![]() [Note from developer: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 was released on November 17, 2016] ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 The changes in version 5.3 beta 6 are in relation with the sub version 8 of the Java Runtime Environment used under Windows since version 5.1 and 5.2 of Sweet Home 3D. As under Linux, Sweet Home 3D installer has come with the same version of the JRE 6 since an older version, delivering a beta version for this system would have no change in that spirit. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 I just tried version 5.2 under Ubuntu 16.04 and discovered it didn't work on my configuration too. Then I tried to switch to Java 3D 1.6 / JOGL 2.4 where it seems to work. I'll deliver soon a beta version to let you check how it works on your side. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Here's the version 5.3 Beta 7 available for various systems. This version changes how indicators around objects are detected to ensure that it's easier to move them in the plan at small scales (particularly, it should be easier to move the visitor in the plan). But the most important changes are elsewhere and I hope you can find some time to test them: - First, this version introduces a change in .sh3d file format. From this version, the zipped .sh3d file contains an additional entry named Home.xml which contains the same data as the existing Home entry, but at XML format respecting the DTD available in SweetHome3D.dtd. From now, when Sweet Home 3D opens a .sh3d file, it will first try to read the home it contains from its Home.xml entry, then if this entry doesn't exist, it will read the Home entry to enable the compatibility with all .sh3d files saved with older versions of Sweet Home 3D. As the program part that decodes a Home.xml entry is very different from the Java unserialization used to decode a Home entry, please test this beta version on copies of your .sh3d files to avoid losing data in case I forgot something (I checked and rechecked this feature but there could be some special configurations that might cause some problems). To test correctly this new feature, be sure to save files and reopen them at least once. My bigger concern is about furniture groups handling that it would be nice to test too. Introducing this new Home.xml entry in .sh3d files will help programmers who want to reuse homes designed with Sweet Home 3D in other applications programmed in languages different from Java, and is the logical continuation of the similar entry programmed for Export to HTML5 plug-in. From the tests I ran, writing the additional Home.xml entry takes very little time and occupies little space in a .sh3d file. Sweet Home 3D will continue to save Home and Home.xml entries in .sh3d files for a while to ensure a smooth transition to the future .sh3d format that will probably not contain any Home entry at the end (only Java programs are able to write a Home entries). In all cases, the Java version of Sweet Home 3D will always be able to read existing .sh3d files, so don't worry for the files you designed in the past. - For programmers, this version introduces the HomeObject super class for the classes of objects handled in a Home instance, i.e. walls, furniture, rooms, cameras... HomeObject class lets programmers store string properties, like IDs or any other additional data that might be needed in a plug-in or a program derived from Sweet Home 3D. Of course, these properties will be saved in .sh3d files. - For Windows users, I replaced Java3D 1.5.2 by Java3D 1.6 which might fix issues that some users continue to report (most of the time under Windows 7). I could have done this change some time ago, but in one of my not so common Windows configurations running under Parallels Desktop, Java3D 1.6 provoked a crash at program start, something which prevents me to be confident. But I finally found how to fix this issue in Java3D 1.6 and I'm not reluctant anymore to deliver it in Sweet Home 3D. So please, test this version on any Windows box that you may have at your disposal to check it correctly works. - For Linux users, I have some very good news: I fixed two bad bugs that will give a new life to Sweet Home 3D under that system. First, I replaced Java3D 1.5.2 by Java3D 1.6 to fix the crash of Sweet Home 3D under Ubuntu 16. But that's not all! I also found how to circumvent the bug that prevented to use textures on room floors under Java 7 and 8. So, Linux users can again run Sweet Home 3D with the Java version of their choice. As Java 8 fixed also the font color in the menu bar which was too dark under recent Ubuntu releases, I replaced the JRE 6 by the latest JRE 8 in Linux installers. Note that in my tests configuration running under Parallels Desktop, the navigation in the 3D view is slower with Java3D 1.6 than with Java3D 1.5.2, but maybe it's due to the video drivers provided by Parallels Desktop. Please, share your experience on this point too. - For people with old or special configurations, the Jar executable version provides Java 3D 1.5.2 and 1.6 libraries and under Windows and Linux, you can force the version 1.5.2 of this library with the new System property com.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.version. For example, if you want to run Sweet Home 3D with Java 3D 1.5.2 under Linux without checking offScreen support, you can run the following command: java -Dcom.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.version=1.5.2 -Dcom.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.checkOffScreenSupport=false -Xmx640m -jar /path/to/SweetHome3D-5.3.beta7.jar"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_51\bin\java.exe" -Dj3d.rend=d3d -Dsun.java2d.d3d=true -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=false -Dsun.java2d.ddoffscreen=true -Dsun.java2d.ddscale=true -Xmx640m -jar /path/to/SweetHome3D-5.3.beta7.jarI'm looking forward to reading your feedback, and don't worry, new features should come soon ![]() ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Congratulations on beta. At least no immediate crashes or anomalies under Win 10 build 14393.222. Just tested a couple of existing files and messed around with them. Everything normal, and saved files open nicely with 5.2a without a problem. ..navigation in the 3D view is slower with Java3D 1.6 than with Java3D 1.5.2... Possibly, but hard to say - nothing very obvious (but with relatively small files). Do tell if there are specific procedures you would like tested. ok |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3Hello, I have been testing 5.3.beta7 version on Ubuntu 14.04 (I had crashes on this system with version 5.1 see https://sourceforge.net/p/sweethome3d/bugs/583/ ) * no crash so far (open file, modify, save, quit, reopen, make photo and vidéo) * I confirm that virtual 3D visit is slower (with mouse : very jerky (fr:saccadé), with arrows : slow, on my 1440 x 1080 display - no difference whether it is opened in a separate windows or if I navigate in a smaller part of the main window) - tested with three sh3D files of 2,8 Mo, 4,7 Mo and 25 Mo : no difference, size does not matter ! * I did not re-import the furniture libraries however it seems they are active because I have a lot of items in the furniture list + I have a message about library update at startup. Did you include a lot of them by default ? (I'll test on Ubuntu 16.04 and Mint 18.0 later) |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 okh and mohican, thanks for your feedback. This is encouraging even if I had a report about a regression under Mint 18 where the beta crashed (but fortunately, the executable Jar with -Dcom.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.version=1.5.2 option worked). mohican, imported furniture and textures are stored in the .eteks/sweethome3d folder of your user folder, that's why they are still in the catalogs of Sweet Home 3D when you switch to another version. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Hi Emmanuel I am using the new version on windows 7 home premium, the only thing i have noticed is that several of the textures reverted to their original setting, simple enough to change back. It only appeared to occur on larger objects, roofs, grass and patios were affected on 3 different projects. Other than that, all good m8. Mike |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Thanks Mike for the details you sent me. After more tests, I found a stupid regression I programmed: the problem is about angle set on textures. They are simply ignored when you try to set an angle different from 0 in the Beta 7. But fortunately, angles set on textures with a previous version are not lost when .sh3d files are saved in Beta 7 (both in Home and Home.xml entries are correct). I'll deliver soon a new Beta version. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 After a discussion about the evolution of the .sh3d format with some French experts, it seemed better that the Home.xml uses some XML elements and attributes close to the classes of the model layer, rather than an existing XML format like Collada or BIM XML. Just open a Home.xml and you'll recognize the data handled by Sweet Home 3D classes. I don't dream of creating a new standard, but at least this should help to exchange data with other programs if needed. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Hi Emmanuel Just realised it is not only textures that are giving an issue. I have 2 items, a sliding door that i created in sh3d and part of a fire escape also created in sh3d, each time i open the prog they have reverted to thier original color. I can email you the sh3d file as it is quite small. |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Thanks Mike for your file and the description of your problems. I was able to fix the issues in the version 5.3 Beta 8. This new Beta version allows to change again the angle of a texture and fixes an error during file opening that ignored the color of items which belong to a group. Unfortunately, this second bug provoked a loss of the color information of these items when the opened file was saved with the Beta 7. I hope you tried that Beta version on copies of your sh3d files as recommended, otherwise you'll have to change the color of the grouped items again. Under Linux, the Beta 8 version should also fix a bug that grayed the 3D view when Sweet Home3D window was activated/deactivated. I didn't find yet why navigating in the 3D view runs slower than with version 5.2 under that system. More feedback and ideas on this point would be very appreciated. Finally, this version 5.3 might contain only the .sh3d file format change and bug fixes. Some Windows and Linux users waited for corrections on critical bugs for quite a long time now, and I feel it would be better not to wait more weeks. Hope you'll agree. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Hi, I'm a returning user and I thought I'd try the latest, so I downloaded the 5.3 beta8 jar to run on osx 10.10.5, java 1.8.0_45. Everything seemed to be fine, I started editing a new plan, saved it and quit, but when I went to open it again nothing seemed to happen. I ended up running the jar from the command line with > java -Xmx640m -jar SweetHome3D-5.3.beta8.jar So that I could see if there was any console output to indicate a problem. And sure enough when I tried opening my file I got the following stack trace: Reading this forum thread makes me suspect this may be due to the new file format, so I thought you'd appreciate the report. I can send you my file if that helps. Dan |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Sorry, ran into trouble under Win 8.1. Downloaded beta 11 under Win 8.1 (the Asus tablet) - SweetHome3D-5.3.beta11-windows.exe apparently installs well with all the normal setup stuff. However, SH3D does not start - just stops at the splash screen. Background process Java(TM) Platform SE binary processor usage dies down and hangs with 20+ MB of memory usage. I also seem to get an extra Internet Explorer background process, and the Windows Explorer process seems to restart. And all Wi-Fi connections are killed. No Java console appears, only splash screen and the background process. Updated Java, same thing. Tried a second download of SweetHome3D-5.3.beta11-windows.exe and installed again. Same thing. Restarted, same thing. Just a hanging Java(TM) Platform SE binary background process and splash screen. It may be something on the hardware/software side here, but there have been no other recent changes to the PC. ok |

Reinstalled 5.2a (Sweet Home 3D ® Version 5.2a Java version 1.8.0_74 / 32 bit / 0.6 GB max), and SH3D worked beautifully. ok PS - Rather a worrying experience, starting the beta really made everything act up. And the WIFI issues continued after reinstalling 5.2.a (connections kept being killed) until reboot - but that may be a coincidence/network interference of sorts. |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 The version 5.3 Beta 12 fixes small errors that were still happening on Home.xml entry in .sh3d files. After running some write/read tests on hundreds of files, I'm now much more confident in how the new file format is handled in this beta version, and a final release should come soon. This version comes also with the final version of Java3D 1.6.0 that Harvey Harrison released yesterday. Many thanks to him ![]() okh, I'm quite bothered by your report because you're the first Windows user to report a regression. Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 okh, I'm quite bothered by your report because you're the first Windows user to report a regression. Can you also check whether the version 5.3 Beta 6 works or fails? Here goes - short answer is beta 6 did work - long answer is:Most strange: results under Win 8.1, 32 bit, 2GB memory - and a sluggish little processor. BETA 6: Tried SweetHome3D-5.3.beta6-windows.exe and it worked - loaded a reasonably big .sh3d file (2MB), no problem. Closed SH3D and noticed that my WiFi connection was killed (???) and no networks visible where there should have been five +. BETA 12: Tried SweetHome3D-5.3.beta12-windows.exe, splash screen appears, then nothing. Windows Explorer goes bananas and maxes out the processor while trying to start SH3D. Still nothing. But my WiFi connection is still intact... The Java process just hangs there without getting any further. So yes, it appears to be something between beta 6 and 11. I reinstalled 5.2a - and it works as expected, but Windows Explorer going at full capacity at start (and killing the WiFi again, reboot required to get it back, grrr). Uploaded new dump file from BETA 12 if it can be of help. Btw - I did update Java between the two unsucessful beta 11 atttempts yesterday, but that did not make a difference. Note that the WiFi connections could be connected to something else in the OS, and that it is Win Explorer that takes the WiFi down when resetting - it has happened before that the WiFi goes down when Win Explorer gets into trouble. It is almost as if the later versions maxes out the OS/Win Explorer. Sorry for the unscientific reporting, but limited technical skills prevent reporting more. As you will have figured, the installation was done on the ASUS tablet thingy with limited resources (but lovely all the same) - maybe the little thing is just overwhelmed... ok |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 FIRST: I like opensource and free software. I hope this great piece of software remain free. About licences files I've suggest to be grouped in a folder NOT deleted but is only my way to organize files. Second: On Default Furniture I don't exclude/add no piece. All I do was to rearrange them with ads of FurnitureLibraryEditor 1.19 and FurnitureLibraryEditorWithID-1.14 to preserve all the characteristics. As result is a folder for every furniture with .obj .mlt files. The .propreties files was generated accordingly. Then I've edit by hand the 2 .propreties files to add for every furniture the missing specifications. I verify every .obj files by import them in AOI and correct them when necessarily(only 3 or 4). Also I add 2 new category: -Geometry (for basic geometric objects) -Decorations (for plants, carpets, paints etc.) I suppose also I've make some mistakes not intentionally. I test now v5.3beta12 linux64 on debian strech and work batter then b11. ---------------------------------------- A computer program does what you tell it to do, not what you want it to do. Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Did a quick try. Version 5.3 Beta 13 Java version 1.8.0_51 / 32 bit / 0.6 GB max - Under Win 8.1 32 bit (underpowered little Asus). First attempt - everything starts normally. Load a 2,1 MB compressed file. Make a couple of random changes. Have lots of other programs open at the same time. Everything looks normal. Answer another e-mail and when I return to SH3D, it freezes and my WiFi connection is killed again (most strange). I kill the Java/SH3D process, close some of the other software running, and try to recreate the crash with no success. SH3D seems to run normally. Will try more later, but it can have been coincidence / some sort of overload. ok PS - one other little thing, on both attempts, I get a very large spacing between the items in the searchable catalogue list when I resize the furniture side-bar (not before). Note that I have lots of private catalogue items with many 'extra' properties in the .sh3f files that fill up many lines when displayed in the searchable list. Sent you a screen-shot. |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 After several issues with SH3D 5.2 on Linux (Graphical issues and crashes with WebStart, long startup time with installer), I'm glad to see after some testing that the 5.3 release supposes to be much stabler on Linux. I can confirm the notable performance decrease - although more related to the plan instead to 3D. In fact, it's not really usable anymore from an UX perspective. So I'll unfortunately have to continue with 5.2 for now However, awesome product! |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 The version 5.3 Beta 14 comes with the following features/fixes: - Textures coordinates on floor borders are computed differently to ensure textures are always showed correctly: textures are now mapped from bottom to top and starting at each room point. - Selected items are kept visible in the plan when Zoom in or Zoom out tools are used. - Scale and origin of an imported background image are initialized from the values of the image available at previous or next level when it exists. - When a background image is used, walls are painted with a half transparent pattern while drawing them or while placing doors and windows. Final version 5.3 should come soon ![]() Okh, your WiFi connection malfunction is strange. Sweet Home 3D doesn't use Internet except at start to check if there's a new version. Could you disable updates check in preferences to see if it behaves better? The extra spacing you report in the catalog must come from the long information you set on one item. D5KjC6RC, thanks for your feedback, even if your report is worrying. If you feel that version 5.3 beta isn't usable, I wonder if I should use Java3D 1.6.0 or not. But as you think that slowness doesn't come from the 3D part, I'll see if it comes from the Java version itself. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Under Mint 18 the program opens, displays an error message concerning some error in de 3D rendering system, and tells me to update my DirectX/OpelGL drivers, then closes. Using the Jar version displays the same message. Version 5.2 runs without problems. ---------------------------------------- Hans new website - under constuction hansdirkse.info |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Final version 5.3 should come soon Looking forward to it and the xml approach. Okh, your WiFi connection malfunction is strange. Sweet Home 3D doesn't use Internet except at start to check if there's a new version. Could you disable updates check in preferences to see if it behaves better? Yes it is pretty strange... Tried beta 14, with and without Update Check. Everything seems ok. At one point, I did indeed loose my WiFi connection again, but I do not think it is SH3D as such that kills it. I think it may have to do with many programs simultaneously accessing the 64 GB SD card, generating read/write errors and taking down Windows Explorer. But then it is NOT a SH3D issue, it is a problem with how the system mounts the SD card. Will let you know if it happens in some sort of identifiable way related to SH3D.The extra spacing you report in the catalog must come from the long information you set on one item. That is what I thought. But I suppose it is new to 5.3 as my libraries did not change since 5.2.a. Probably few people will notice as not that many use information fields in the libraries extensively. But I would prefer the more compressed view with title and first line of the information fields so I can see more models at the same time. I also tried the Category folders view, and there too there are some oddities with how info is presented. Sent you screenshots.ok |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Version 5.3 was released tonight. Thanks to you all for your feedback and your support Hans, I finally added a second executable command file named SweetHome3D-Java3D-1_5_2 to Linux installers, to let you and people who feel that performances with Java 3D 1.6.0 are not good, run Sweet Home 3D with Java 3D 1.5.2. From the feedback of more Linux users, we'll see if finally I can get rid of Java 3D 1.5.2 in installers one day or the other. Remember that the Java option -Dcom.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.version=1.5.2 lets you also run Sweet Home 3D executable Jar with Java 3D 1.5.2 under Windows and Linux, and that the Java 3D version in use is now indicated in the About dialog box. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 But as you think that slowness doesn't come from the 3D part, I'll see if it comes from the Java version itself. I can confirm that there is no performance impact anymore after switching from bundled jre8 to (5.2 bunndled) jre1.6.0_45. |

Re: Sweet Home 3D 5.3 Just noticed that performance degrades as well, when opening a home with sh3d-5.3(jre1.6.0_45) that has been previously saved by sh3d-5.3. That's to day, I experience only "good" performance by using the old JRE with 5.2 version homes. Now I'm wondering whether the performance issue could be related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28504943/j...slower-after-jvm-8-update |
