Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files Hello, I started using Sweet Home 3D a week or so ago. I created models of my furniture using Wings3D which I want to import into Sweet Home 3D. The two applications share three formats: OBJ, DAE and 3DS. It worked fine for my first piece of furniture, but since then it doesn't work anymore. OBJ & DAE: Sweet Home 3D says "The format of the chosen model is not supported. Please choose another model". 3DS: The file can be imported, but the materials are wrong. Of five different materials, only two are recognized. If I try to change materials using the dialog in "Modify furniture" > "Color and texture" > "Materials" > "Modify", the same two are shown, but no more. I am not sure on which side the problem is, Wings3D or Sweet Home 3D. Is it possible to add attachments to a post in this forum to show the problem? 3DS file: http://expirebox.com/download/7c94ddebcb3672e63f3e3fc0b6eab776.html Screenshot in Wings3D showing five materials: http://expirebox.com/download/d4f09a75469cc883a8340695571355db.html Screenshot in Sweet Home showing only two materials: http://expirebox.com/download/2106fbc590f54e4f759452205f934919.html |

Re: Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files Please share or send me the OBJ and DAE files, to let me check if it could be a bug in Sweet Home 3D. For the 3DS issue, it will be fixed in version 4.5 that you can test here. ![]() ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files DAE files are now ok. I completely deleted the source file in Wings3D that was making problems and remodeled some of my furniture from scratch, and now the exported DAE file is fine. Here is a link however to an archive containing an OBJ and a 3DS file which do not "work": http://expirebox.com/download/91f5a94c81786ad3f5fa1f81d3a68575.html (OBJ cannot be loaded at all and materials in 3DS are incorrect). |

Re: Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files 3DS and DAE look the same to me, using SH3D v4.5beta on Ubuntu 14.04 64 bits. H ---------------------------------------- Hans new website - under constuction hansdirkse.info |

Re: Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files I forgot to mention I am using version 4.4 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 (yep, a little old, but I have my reasons for not updating the OS). |

Re: Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files The OBJ file uses a way to describe faces I've never seen before. Blender accepts it but not Sweet Home 3D and probably other software. If you look at OBJ file, you'll see lines starting by f and followed by vertices numbers and // like: f 1// 33// 34// 2//Normally, this line should be written: f 1 33 34 2// should occur only if followed by texture coordinates index. It would be nice to report this issue to Wings 3D, because it should be easy for them to fix. The 3DS file works fine in Sweet Home 3D 4.5 Beta. In all formats, the mirror texture doesn't appear but this might be due to the fact that you didn't export texture coordinates. ---------------------------------------- Emmanuel Puybaret, Sweet Home 3D creator |

Re: Importing OBJ/DAE/3DS files If you look at OBJ file, you'll see lines starting by f and followed by vertices numbers and // like: f 1// 33// 34// 2//Normally, this line should be written: f 1 33 34 2// should occur only if followed by texture coordinates index. Interesting. If I had to rely on OBJ files (DAE works and is fine for me), I could edit the files by hand and remove the spurious //. It would be nice to report this issue to Wings 3D, because it should be easy for them to fix. Done: Wings3D bug report. The 3DS file works fine in Sweet Home 3D 4.5 Beta. I must admit I haven't figured out yet how to use Java web start on my computer. I may try again later, but it's not urgent, since I can use DAE to share files between Wings3D and Sweet Home 3D. In all formats, the mirror texture doesn't appear but this might be due to the fact that you didn't export texture coordinates. Aha! This newbie didn't know what "UV coordinates" were until now, but checking that box when exporting a file in Wings3D just solved my problem. Wonderful :-) Thanks! |
