Re: Installation woes on MacBook Pro
Running the following command will help you to find where java is:
sudo find / -name java -type f

Be patient, this command should take a while.

Hello

FYI /usr/bin/java is a symlink to /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Applications/Application Loader.app/Contents/MacOS/itms/java/bin/java

Command results below, let me know what you think.

MacMimi-2:~ Mimi$ sudo find / -name java -type f

Re: Installation woes on MacBook Pro
Hello

I managed to get it working again!

I had to sudo.

Then I removed all the Java Framework stuff using good old "rm -rf System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/"

Then I unpacked JavaForOSX.dmg. It contains 4 .pkg files. JavaEssentials.pkg, JavaForOSX.pkg both contain a Payload file which I have moved to /JavaEssentials.tgz, /JavaForOSX.tgz

Then I dirtily did a tar zxvf of these two files while in the root folder.

At this point my Java install was totally fubar, but it was good enough to "fool" the installer. Thus, I then reran the .pkg installer from the JavaForOSX .dmg file and now at last, Sweet Home 3D is working again :-)

Pheeew...

Re: Installation woes on MacBook Pro
Hello Guys,

I'm having a hard time getting Sweet Home 3D to work on my new Macbook Pro Retina. I previously had it running without problems on my Mac Mini, which runs OS X Lion.

On the Macbook Pro, I have OS X Mountain Lion (18.8.2). When I launch the app, it says it needs Java SE 6 and prompts for an install. However when I click "install" (which should trigger the download + install process), it says the software is currently unavailable.

I've tried for several days and I always get this message.

I've installed java directly using Sun installation package and this is what I have now:

MacMimi-2:jre Mimi$ java -version
openjdk version "1.7.0-internal"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-internal-root_2012_01_27_18_44-b00)
OpenJDK Server VM (build 21.0-b17, mixed mode)

Turns out installing Java doesn't make any difference. It still says Java SE 6 is needed.

I've tried downloading and using the "portable" version but I get the same error when I click on the MacOS X app.

Any clues on how to get this to work please? Sweet Home 3D is a superb app and I would like to enjoy it on my new computer...

Cheers
JM

The Java 7 install is actually the reason you're not getting anywhere with that particular version of Sweet Home 3D. The older Mac build was looking specifically for Apple's Java 6, and simply installing another Java runtime doesn't satisfy that requirement.

I'd try a newer Sweet Home 3D release rather than fighting with the Java 6 installer. Version 3.7 and later were updated specifically for Lion/Mountain Lion, and later releases eventually bundled their own Java runtime so you didn't have to modify the system Java installation.

Also, the "portable" package isn't really the solution on a Mac. The current download page still distinguishes the Mac installer from the portable package, so make sure you're using the appropriate Mac DMG for your OS.

So in short: don't keep trying different Java 7 installs with the old application. Get a Mountain Lion-compatible Sweet Home 3D build that includes or supports the appropriate Java runtime. That should be much cleaner.
