Wall width does not match the entered width
Hi,

I found that when walls join their width is not valid anymore. Did I miss anything here?

Re: Wall width does not match the entered width
The length of a wall is measured from the start and end points of the center line of the wall. When you connect a wall to one end the start point shifts halfway the thickness of the wall you connect to (the center line of the connecting wall). Measuring the outside of the wall should still be the same.
There have been numerous discussions about why the center line is used. There are good technical reasons for this but you need to get used to the concept.

Re: Wall width does not match the entered width
I can understand some find it usefull, but for me it's hard to work with it as I need to always remember to where I need to add/sub half of the wall.
What I also believe when the settings dialog says the wall has 21,55 it length should be 21,55. If merging walls does something to its length, why is it not refledted in the property dialog?

Re: Wall width does not match the entered width
Look at the dialog. It doesn't say the length of the wall but the distance between end-points. The position of the end-points shifts when you connect a wall to an end.

Re: Wall width does not match the entered width
I get it, thanks for the reply. I use local lang translation, which is not so much strict as the en one - will switch to en.

Still I moved from sketchup, as I think SH3D is great but find my self in a very difficult position doing a simple walls.

I tried different aproach.

1. Doing all at once (not doing double click to end) - failed, as I get wrong file width once i get to corners and wallcross.

2. Doing by Copy&paste predone walls. So I add a wall, set it length and then move one next other to merge and until I merge them its fine. When I join them they loose all valid widths and redoing them is a mess.

3. I also read on the forum I could do rooms and then double click to add walls. I also tried that but seems this is a bit buggy and some artifacts are added and this also is not usable. Reported this here

How do You think I should approach doing walls from a already existing project? How to You do yours?

I thought some YT guys could show me but they alwasy draw something, which they do not to be acurate (to cm) and that is okay but that is not what I need.

I see this problem has been already reported her https://sourceforge.net/p/sweethome3d/feature-requests/750/

What I find useful in sketchup is https://sourceforge.net/p/sweethome3d/feature-requests/1085/ what do You use instead here?

A bit buggy? I never encountered this and use it quite often without any problems.

First of all, Sweet Home 3D is NOT Drawing, 3D modelling, or CAD software. Don't expect it to have the same features and/or procedures. The smallest unit is 1mm which should be more than sufficient for interior design and drawing a floorplan. It can use smaller sizes but the displayed values will be rounded to 1 decimal (0.1 cm). I have never seen a floorplan that uses wall measurements smaller than 0.5cm. You simply can't pour concrete to an exact mm size.

You have to understand how the length of a wall relates to the distance between the end-points of a wall depending on the wall thicknesses. Once you get that it's very simple to accurately draw walls with a know length.
The easiest is to click once where your wall starts and drag a little in the direction the wall should go. Press <enter> and you can enter the exact distance between end-points, press enter again to set this length. Move the mouse for the next wall in the direction it needs to go and press <enter> to set that length. Rinse and repeat until you have all your walls. Remember that you you are working with distance-between-end-points, not the length of the inside or outside of the wall. (That is the reason that the center line is used: it removes the difference between inside and outside length which can only be certain for outside walls. It is a value that remains the same when you change the thickness of connected walls.)

Install the AdvancedEdit plugin if you haven't already done this. It's an essential plugin that makes moving, rotating, etc much easier and works on any object in your 2D plan. It makes moving a wall a specific distance much easier.

For a floorplan it is often easier to draw the room and use the double-click to create the walls. At least for some of the walls.
