2D stairs
Is there any way of showing in 2D some stairs as seen on typical floor plans, with the steps and an arrow pointing up them?

Thanks

Pilch:

Your question isn't very clear.

1 - You can import a background image using Plan --> Import background image .
2 - You can use a picture of the desired staircase and import it as a texture. You can then apply the texture to a box with the desired dimensions.
3 - You can model the staircase in 3D (use boxes with height 0.1), and add the arrows (narrow boxes at 45 degree angles). Group your model, export and import it and you can even re-dimension it.

I hope this helps.

Re: 2D stairs
Thanks Hans. I'm not sure these options are quite what I am after really.

I would ideally like to be able to treat an imported image as a piece of furniture and move it around. When using a texture, the texture appears in the 3D model but not the 2d model.

Something like the image in this link (if I'm allowed to post it) is basically what I would like to be able to see in 2d plan view.

Re: 2D stairs
Pilch, there's a solution for your case with SH3F files since version 2.2, but this is not easy to use until I release a furniture library editor.
You should create a SH3F file that contains your pieces (you can create it from the one accompanying this message or from the furniture you imported with ExportToSH3F plug-in), edit its PluginFurnitureCatalog.properties file and add a property named planIcon# with a value equal to the path of the icon that will appear in plan.

Re: 2D stairs
Thanks for the guidance Puybaret. I got as far as this....

edit its PluginFurnitureCatalog.properties file and add a property named planIcon#

... but I unfortunately don't know how to edit this file. Whereabouts is it located?

Thanks again.

Re: 2D stairs
staircase.sh3f and any SH3F file are in fact zipped files.

Replace sh3f extension by zip, unzip it, and you'll find the PluginFurnitureCatalog.properties file.
It's a text file and you can edit with any text editor.

Once finished you'll have to zip all the content of the directory again and replace the zip extension by sh3f. Caution: PluginFurnitureCatalog.properties must be at the root of the zip file, not in a subdirectory of the zipped file.

Re: 2D stairs
Puybaret,

I downloaded your staircase.sh3f example, I can modify it without any problems. However I am unable to see the image staircasePlanIcon.png in SH3D. What am I missing?

When I import staircase.sh3f is see the following:

But I would like to see staircasePlanIcon.png in the 2D view (like Pilch hoped to achieve).

Thanks for your help.

Erik.

Re: 2D stairs
Hans, Emmanuel,

i think i can guess what this is all about. There is a need for a symbol of a staircase. just like a wall is one of sh3d's primitive objects, some could need a staircase just like this.

Re: 2D stairs
eterps, be sure to use the one you imported. The list may contain synonymous stairs.

Re: 2D stairs
I am so pleased I found this thread, this is exactly what I am also trying to do. I only want the 2D representation as I am sketching a house layout to give to an architect who will re-draw it. I don't really understand what it is I have to do to get a 2D object showing stairs (like the image referred to in a previous posting - http://www.express-stairs.co.uk/images/stair_plan_6.jpg) onto my library. Could you explain the steps for a newbie? Thanks.
