Another "New" Home Based on a House Plan I Found Online
I know I've just recently posted about a vintage-style house plan upgrade, but that was something that I'd completed a while ago, just decided to include on this forum, and have since moved on.

Once again, I've found someone else's work, liked it, but thought of a few changes to it that I wanted to see how they would work out. This one is from the website Houseplans.net with the innocuous name of "Contemporary Plan 9185-00008". I liked the general floor plan, but wasn't as keen on the roofline, rearranged a couple of the rooms, and added some extra space to the back. I have not added any of the walkways, a driveway, or a mailbox; there is a bit of a back deck but I didn't include a patio area.

Here are the images that I've rendered so far; I'm currently in the process of getting more taken.

Pantry room. I wanted the cabinets to be two-tones like I have them in the actual kitchen area, but the models I'd used wouldn't let me do that. Either it looks fine like this, or just imagine the parts above the countertops are white instead. biggrin



Hallway to the two small bedrooms and main bathroom. In the original plan, the laundry room was down this hallway behind the pantry area, but I moved it over near the garage (the door to it can be seen in the third picture of the kitchen/living room area next to the entryway/foyer).

I've got the rest of the pictures completed.



Next to the main bathroom is the first of the bedrooms. Not much to it though. I was able to add a full size bed, and maybe a queen size might fit if it had smaller nightstands. The corner of the closet is visible on the left.



Here's the next bedroom. It is a longer room than the first bedroom but also a little narrower. I might have been able to put fit a queen size bed against one of the walls but I don't think I'd be able to include anything else with it. I didn't realize until just this moment that the bookcase closest to the visitor rendered really poorly. The corner of the closet is visible on the right.



Now onto the first of the en suite bedrooms; this is the small hallway leading to it. I had thought of including it with the bedroom but it I didn't think it was working very well.





The first en suite bedroom, the first picture is from near the door, and the second one from next to one of the nightstands. That door on the diagonal wall is to a walk-in closet.



The en suite bathroom.





The second en suite, and final, bedroom. The door on the diagonal wall is to a walk-in closet. There is also a linen closet near the door.



The en suite bathroom. That's a steam shower in the back.



The laundry / mud room. Just out of shot on the right is the door to the garage.





The 2-car garage. Behind the accordion doors are the water heater and HVAC system. I have the electrical panel just out of view on the wall near the accordion doors.



I had realized that I needed lighting in back, so I added them and took a revised back aerial view picture. And, now that I'm looking at this revised picture, I think I could have added a hedge along that back wall.

It's a very big, difficult job that deserves respect. Everything is very interesting. But let me give you some advice. In any room (bedroom, bathroom, dressing room, kitchen, garage..) it is important how a person will move there. It is less important what the maximum sizes of objects can fit there. For example, a double bed has standard dimensions, it all depends on the size of the mattress. 140-160-180-200 in width and usually 200 in length. To this size it is necessary to add the structural thickness of the enclosing elements of the bed (kingpins, headboard). It is about 12cm (6+6cm) wide, 18-25 cm long, depending on the thickness of the headboard in the model. Now it is very important that a person can walk everywhere, from all sides of the bed. The minimum size for the passage is 60 cm, preferably more. You can find bedside tables 45 cm wide, and they will fit! But a person will not be able to get out of bed in the morning without hitting his forehead against the wall. Therefore, you need to know the size of the room (length and width, not area!) and put a bed that is suitable FOR human MOVEMENT around it. If you need a bigger bed, then you need to increase the size of the room, and not worsen people's lives. The same applies to the direction of the door opening. You have an unfortunate door location in your dressing room, you need to squeeze into the wall to enter. It is better to place the handle on the left rather than on the right and enter the dressing room from the free space of the room, rather than from a cramped corner (if the door opens outward). You need to put cars with exact dimensions in the garage, you can not trust the model from the Internet, only the verified dimensions of the car. These sizes are easy to find on the manufacturer's website or from sellers. A minimum of 80 cm must be left on the driver's side, otherwise the door will hit the wall or the driver will not be able to get out comfortably. If there are two cars, then the driver has two such spaces for each car. Of course, it's better for the passenger, but this is quite a luxury. The rear door also increases the size of the car, you need to consider. You always need to remember about the person who will open the doors and take out things, leaving space for this. Rather than just inserting a car into a room to make it fit. The main thing is the person next to him. To figure out how much space you need, put your hand against the wall in front of your face. Use a tape measure to measure the distance from your ass to the wall in front of you, and that will be the right size from the open back door in the garage. That's the only way.

I forgot to tell you. If there is a window next to the bed, then consider the radiator and the curtain, you also need to pass by them. If the size of the room is very small, but you need a normal large bed, then you can use other heating systems, for example, a warm water skirting board instead of radiators, and, for example, infrared electric ceiling panels. And do not use classic curtains, for example, use blinds in the window opening or on the window frames themselves. This should be incorporated into the final design of the room so that it is convenient to use.

I've finally got the revised pictures taken.





I'd moved one of the vehicles out of the garage so that there's enough room for the doors to open. I'd also added the driveway and small walkway.











The changes I'd made here weren't listed but a few things I wasn't completely satisfied with. I'd narrowed the door frames and painted them the same as the wall color so that they blend in. I also changed the angle a bit of the living room furniture.

There wasn't changes made in the pantry so I'm not including a picture here. Same with the dining room and bathrooms.



The first bedroom. I added curtains, and took away the wallpaper.



The second bedroom. I moved the bed and nightstand around a little. I also added curtains here as well as a set of Venetian blinds, and also took away the wallpaper.





The secondary en suite bedroom. I moved the furniture around, changed the wall the wallpaper was on, and added curtains and a bookcase. I also added a few pieces of decoration. Oh, and I also turned the door to the walk-in closet around so that it opens into the closet instead of the bedroom door.





The primary en suite bedroom. Just like with the secondary en suite bedroom, I've moved around the furniture and wallpaper, and added the cabinet and curtains.



A couple of minor changes here; added tiles and the cute picture added to the back wall.





Inside the garage.





The back of the house. I added the patio and a couple of lampposts.







Finally, screenshots of the separate levels.

This is a bit later than I intended to update, since I believe I made some changes to this back in March, before I left for Florida, but here goes.

I wasn't happy with the way the wall looked above the kitchen, especially the pipe for the hood vent. I decided to move the wall in above the kitchen cabinets to cover up that area. Now that part of the wall is flush with most of the upper cabinets. So, here are new images of the Great Room, from each of the our corners.









And, because of these changes, there are a few changes to the outside as well. Here are new images of the front and the back.





Also, I have another house that I was working on around the same time as this one, but didn't upload the images. I have recently started working on updating that house, and getting images of it.

I think that this is the best place to share this picture. It's kind of a "sneak peak" of the other house that I mentioned in my last post here, and it shows off the wonderful models that Keet created for me of the Lord of the Rings Hadhafang sword and its display.



The sword and its display can be seen here in the middle of the photo, right under the hanging light.

Once again, Thank you Keet for creating these wonderful models.

Just let me know if you want to see more of this house.

Thank you, GaudiGalopin3324. Those videos were so fun, especially seeing Gandalf in one of my kitchens!

Okay, for the other house, here's the original floor plan that I found. I've not made too many changes to the floor plan itself (just a few tweaks here and there) because I really liked the layout. The biggest change that I did was to the roofline. The original style was alright, but I wanted to see how it would work in a more Modern style.

This is my most recent version of the house.


Front Aerial view

As you can see, there are a few similarities in style to the previous house, especially with the vaulted, windowed area above the great room. I've also added a front patio area, which I have not furnished yet.


Back Aerial view

I've enclosed the rear porch, and made it into a "Florida" room. I also have a backyard that's been split into both a paved area and a grassy area. I haven't decorated this area yet.


Front Entrance. The patio area is somewhat visible here.


One Side of the house. Here's a slightly better view of the front patio area, and you can see down the side of the house to the backyard.


The other Side of the house.


The Foyer, looking at the Front Door, taken from the opening to the Great Room. Coat closet is on the right.


The Great Room, taken from the opening from the Foyer. As you can see, it's furnished very similarly to the previous house, although the the vaulted ceiling is only over the living room area and the kitchen is now on the other side of the dining room area. To the left is the sliding door to the Laundry/Mud Room which leads to the Garage. Just inside the dining room area, you can see the opening to two of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms.


Another view of the living room area of the Great Room. The open sliding door to the Laundry/Mud Room is more visible. Also slightly visible on the other side of the white bookshelves is the door to the En-Suite Bedroom; not to be confused with the Master En-Suite Bedroom.


The dining room area of the Great Room, taken from in front of the opening to the two bedrooms and one bathroom area. Here, the door to the Master En-Suite Bedroom is straight across. Part of the kitchen is visible.


The kitchen. That door is to the "Florida" room. A corner of the refrigerator is visible on the left of the picture, and there is a dishwasher to the left of the sink.

I've already posted one picture of the En-Suite Bedroom, but here's a different view.

Here you can see the accordion doors to the closet and the sliding door to the En-Suite Bathroom.


En-Suite Bathroom. The layout is basic, and self-explanatory. biggrin

Another view of the Master En-Suite Bedroom. Here you can see into the Master En-Suite Bathroom. There's also a linen closet next to the bedroom door. And I just realized that those smaller pillows on the bed are floating... blushing


The Master En-Suite Bathroom. I've swapped the placement of the shower and the double vanity, changed the double vanity to a single one, and the Water Closet is still around the corner. That door visible in back is the the Walk-In Closet, just as it was in the original design.


The Master Walk-In Closet.


The Laundry/Mud Room. The door to the Garage is visible on the left. I've actually made the room smaller than in the original plan, so that I could add space to one of the bedrooms.


The Garage, taken from the small stairs off of the door to the Laundry/Mud Room. The accordion doors visible on the left are where the hot water heater and the HVAC system are located.


The first of two bedrooms, taken from the bedroom door. I've enlarged this room from the original in order to accommodate a queen-sized bed, which is the Murphy bed pictured. I've also got the room set up as a sewing room. The idea is that the Murphy bed also has a cutting table that folds out. The closet is just out of sight on the right.


Bathroom. Yes, it's set up similarly to the En-Suite Bathroom.


The other bedroom, taken from the bedroom door. The closet is just out of sight on the left.


The "Florida" room. I actually have it furnished this time. I've got a small area set up for someone to sit and look out the back while drinking coffee (or whatever they like), as well as a small couch (maybe with a pull-out bed?) for someone to watch television (mounted on the wall), and a cabinet that hides the cat litter pan next to a taller storage cabinet.


A view of the backyard, standing in the grassy area, looking toward the back door to the "Florida" room. As you can see, I have the grassy area gated off, mostly so that the area can be separated from the paved area. My thinking is that this area can be used for gardening; not flower gardening but for growing fruits and vegetables.

And last, but certainly not least, the screenshots of each level.





I've added the screenshot of the top level because I was able to fit an attic space here, although it's more of a crawl space, probably only enough room for ductwork.

Hello again, all.

I'm back with another plan based off of someone else's design that I found online. This time, I've come up with a plan that's kind of based more or less off of TWO such online finds (ONE and TWO). I didn't follow the look of the front or back of either house, just used the floor plans as my inspiration.

I almost decorated this house like my previous two houses, but changed my mind in the middle of working on it so it's going to have a bit of a reminder of them. Some of the furniture and such I've used are the same as previous homes, mainly because I like them. Here's the file to the house.


Aerial Front. That pyramid-shaped darkness on that middle peak is a set of windows; the lighting inside the house doesn't seem to have lit this up very well if at all.


Aerial Back. The shed didn't render as well as I would've liked unfortunately.

The green siding used on some of the peaks is supposed to be board and batten. The beige is regular clapboard siding. Then there's the light green stucco on most of the house, beige stucco on the "Florida Room" (or more commonly known as a Sun Room), and stone around the base of most of the house.


Virtual Visitor view of the Front. There isn't interior access from the garage to the house, but there's a door on the side near the front door (I probably could have gotten it closer; oh well).


Right side of the house. You can see there's another door from the garage near the steps and door into the house from the Laundry Room.


Left side of the house. Yes, there's not that many windows along this side. I realized as I was rending this picture that I'd forgotten to include the bathroom window, added it, and it's not in the attached file above (or in the floor plan screenshots below).

And as I'm looking at both sides, I could have added more greenery next to the brick walls... and I REALLY need to add lighting...


Half of the backyard, in front of the separating fencing. I haven't furnished this part, and I probably need more lighting here too.


The other half of the backyard. The shed once again didn't render as well as I would've liked; it's supposed to have the green board and batten siding on the peak. Also, there's space between the shed and the pool for some lounging furniture, and again I haven't furnished this area. Lights might be good in this area, I think...


Inside the house, in the Great Room, looking at the Entryway. The model for the accordion doors to the closet always seems to have that weird look to the bottom; all I can say is to look past that, or ignore it. The walls in this part is supposed to be darker than in the Great Room but it's hard to tell in this picture.


Turning around, here's a view of the Great Room (Living Room and Dining Room areas, as well as a bit of sneak peek at the Kitchen). The opening on the left is to the short hallway for the Main Bathroom and the two "non-suite" bedrooms.


Another view of just the Living Room area of the Great Room. The large pyramid-shaped set of windows near the top is visible here. On the right is another view of the short hallway, with a bit of a sneak peek into the Main Bathroom. Behind the entertainment center wall (although not visible here) is a long hallway to the Master En Suite Bedroom, Laundry Room, and the second En Suite Bedroom. There's also an opening into this hallway on the other side of the entertainment center not visible.


Another view of the Dining Room area of the Great Room. There's a built-in sideboard area which I'm using as a coffee bar. There's a bit more of the Kitchen visible. Also, the opening next to the coffee bar is another opening to the long hallway previously mentioned.



Kitchen area. The small peninsula is on the left (and the light here for some reason is too bright I think), and the refrigerator is next to it. I have a table with a butcher block top as an island; I couldn't find a model of exactly what I was looking for, so I would say to imagine that there's also drawers under the butcher block as well.


Another view of the Kitchen, with the door to the Florida Room partially in view, and more storage as well as a double wall oven (it might be a single wall oven and microwave, I think) are completely visible.



The Florida (or Sun) Room. I'm thinking that the couch has a pull-out bed in it for any extra guests. Those two short cabinets in the second picture are hidden cat litter boxes, and the built-in cabinet next to them is for storing all the cat stuff as well as the cleaning supplies.


The Master En Suite Bedroom. The sliding door on the right is to the Walk-In Closet (I've not taken pictures of this), with the door next to it to the attached Den/Office; the sliding door to the Master Bathroom is just out of sight behind the camera. I'm not super satisfied with the wallpaper I chose behind the bed; I might take that off...


The Master Den/Office. I didn't fill in the bookshelves, or add any artwork, in this space.


The Master En Suite Bathroom. Two vanities, and I might have those cabinets a bit darker than I wanted... Also, I might need to switch the placements of the shower head and sitting part in the shower...


Laundry/Utility/Mud Room. There's a bench with some storage on the left side. The short door visible on the right is to the HVAC system, with the vent above. The water heater is next to the HVAC. A drying rack is above the sink. The rest is pretty explanatory. I might change the floor tiles as they seem to not work well with the wall tiles, or I might get rid of the wall tiles in here...


The other En Suite Bedroom. If course this one is mine as I've styled it with all of the goodies I've put into my room in previous houses here. As with the Master En Suite Bedroom, but mirrored, the doors to the Walk-In Closet and attached Den/Office are (kind of) visible on the left, and the door to the En Suite Bathroom is out of sight on the right. This En Suite Bedroom and Bathroom are smaller than the Master, although both the Walk-In Closets and Dens/Offices are the same size.


En Suite Den/Office. Of course, since the bedroom it's attached to would be mine, I've decorated this as my sewing room, with storage on the right, a cutting table near the back, and the desk with a sewing machine on it. As an aside, the shed in the backyard I was thinking of as the storage for my sewing stuff that wouldn't fit in here.


En Suite Bathroom. Since it is smaller than the Master En Suite Bathroom, there's only one vanity. The shower is barely visible on the left.

Now onto the small hallway.


The first Non-En Suite Bedroom (or the Third Bedroom). I've set it up with a bunk bed (full size bed on the bottom and a twin size on the top), and a chest of drawers. Basic layout, and no room for a desk.

I just realized that this is the only bedroom that I forgot to put in curtains and a curtain rod...


Main Bathroom. An enclosed bathtub is kind of visible on the left, and the toilet is out of sight on the right.


The second Non-En Suite Bedroom (or the Fourth Bedroom). That's a queen size platform bed with small attached nightstands, and a chest of drawers. Similar basic layout as the Third Bedroom. The wall color I used in this room I pulled from branches on the accent wall wallpaper. Here's that texture of the wallpaper:




2-Car Garage. The door near the entrance is on the right wall, and the door near the side entrance is out of view on the left. I realized as I was rendering this picture that I'd forgotten to remove the "ceiling" from the ground floor "room", and the cars were being "cut in half". I've fixed it to get the rendering, but it's not fixed in the file attached to this post.

Last, but certainly not least, the screenshots of each level (except the level I'd use to install the swimming pool):

As you can see, I don't have any white walls as I am so bored of them (grew up in an apartment with white walls, and subsequent housing has all been white walls). Most of the walls are more of a mushroom/light beige with a slightly darker mushroom/beige in some places. Almost all of the ceilings and most of the cabinetry are a cream.

I realized not long after posting the previous house that there was another one that fits in this thread. Here's the file for this other house. It's based off this house, but it also has some inspiration from this other, similar plan. Of course, I've made changes, especially to the roofing. Yes, it is designed with a similar look to the the two houses before the previous one. I probably could have changed it like I did with the last house, but just decided to keep it as I had it.

Hi. This is a very extensive project; it’s interesting to take a look at it. I noticed that in your design, the other laundry room has a sink and faucet along with the washing machines, but the last room doesn’t have a sink. It’s standard practice for us to always include a sink in laundry rooms. And the dimensions of a top-loading washing machine must always match the dimensions of the wall cabinets above it. The washing machine door needs to open fully, which is more than 130 cm. That means the bottom of the wall cabinets must be at least 140 cm high; otherwise, it’s inconvenient to load laundry into the washing machine. It seems to me that the door won’t open fully in your setup. And the handles on the top cabinets are too high. An adult man’s arm can reach up to 210 cm, and for women, this height is usually even lower (please check). The entrance door is usually at least 200 cm high, so I assume there’s no way to reach the handles on the topmost cabinets (your handles are approximately 220–225 cm high). In such cases, handles aren’t installed on the doors at all, and a TIP-ON opening mechanism is used instead. What do you think of these comments?

Thank you, GaudiGalopin3324, for the information, especially about the washer and dryer. The thing is, I was thinking that using a front-loading washer and dryer set would be used; I probably could have used the one that's part of the program's library. A set like this could be in there. The model I had used I had copied from other plans I made that were for another set I'd seen on that same website. As for the sink, you are completely correct; I need to add one to that room.

I can get to that shortly, and I'll post a revised render as soon as I can.

Okay, that was a quick fix, I think. I made a few changes and added a few things as well.



First I swapped out the washer/dryer model I used and replaced it with a different model that comes pretty close to the set I'd mentioned earlier. I also replaced one of the lower cabinet models with the sink model that matches.

What items I added are a drying rack above the sink, and a shoe cabinet (something like this, which I used for the measurements), since I didn't include a mud room in this home. Because of adding the shoe cabinet, I had to move the coat hooks to the opposite wall, and because of that I had to move the door to the garage about an inch and a half.

I apologize for not answering your comment regarding the top cabinets.

I do realize that they are quite high. My thinking is that those cabinets could store the things that aren't needed all the time, and could be reached using a foldable stepladder, similar to this.

They are the same cabinet setup that I have in the kitchen, with the same issue and the same possible solution.
