confused   SH3D refuses to save my file
Hi to everyone smile

I'm really excited to use this great software as my family is about to buy our an apartment. I created a file yesterday, but when opening it today I found that everything in the 3D view turned into red blocks, and the thumbnails of the furnitures, textures, ...etc are just a red cross. I made a few changes of the wall, added some textures and when I tried to save it got refused?

Anyone can help please?

WiB:

Can you upload your file to some internet storage place (e.g. www.mediafire.com) and post a link to your file here?

Maybe we can find out what is going on.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Hi Hans, thanks very much! I've uploaded it to google docs, please take a look and let me know if you can fix this. I used a lot of imported textures and furniture, not sure if this is the reason? I don't have any software that will automatically clean my temp files.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Wib:

First questions that arise after looking at your design is:
- Did you move your file to a different location after saving it?
- Did you reorganize your models and/or textures after saving it?

I'm not sure if I'm seeing this correct, but it looks as if the relative paths to your textures (etc) aren't correct anymore.

Second question:
- When importing your special designs, did you assign them to one of the categories (so that you can use them in later designs), or did you only add them to this design?.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
I was able to recover a part of your file and send it to you
I was obliged to delete the following furniture : vase, shower, 滚筒洗衣机, 带柜洗脸盆 and remove textures on floors and walls.

Knowing that a SH3D file is a ZIP file and that the Jar command of the JDK is very tolerant, here's an other tip for advanced users that might help to recover most items in a wrong file:
- If you're under Windows or Linux, install JDK available at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ (JDK is preinstalled under Mac OS X).
- Create a temporary directory anywhere (I'll name it /path/to/tmp).
- Open a Terminal or Command window.
- Go to the temporary directory you created with cd command.
- Type the following command to unzip most of your corrupted SH3D file:

jar xf /path/to/corruptedFile.sh3d

- Type the following command to zip Home entry and other unzipped files from temporary directory in a new file name fixedFile.sh3d:

jar cfM /path/to/fixedFile.sh3d Home *

- Try to open fixedFile.sh3d, remove or replace furniture with a red box, and reset the texture of walls and rooms that appear in red.

I hope this will help.

[Note from developer: The version 4.4 introduced a new system based on the previous method and able to automatically repair SH3D files]

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
In case you're under Mac OS X and you're not afraid to use Terminal, here's also an other tip to recover a file as it was before you opened it. A user tested it successfully a few days ago.
He was forced to quit Sweet Home 3D, and when he relaunched it, his SH3D file was corrupted:
- In Terminal application, launch the following command:

sudo ls /var/folders/*/*/-Tmp-/open*.sweethome3d

This command requires the administrator password and will list the opened SH3D files before Sweet Home 3D crashes (normally these temporary files are deleted when Sweet Home 3D normally quits).

- If Terminal lists some files, copy them on your Desktop with this command:

sudo cp /var/folders/*/*/-Tmp-/open*.sweethome3d ~/Desktop

- Finally, replace the .sweethome3d extension by .sh3d extension to be able to open the recovered files with Sweet Home 3D.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Thank you guys so much!

I'm not sure if I have moved the files, I may have moved them into another folder, I also renamed the files after downloading. Also I guess I may have forgotten to mark the check box "add to library" when importing some of the models.

Anyway thank you so much for the great help and I'll continue exploring biggrin

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
WiB:

You may have renamed the files? That would explain a lot.

The OBJ and MTL file come as a pair. Now, inside the OBJ file the name of the MTL file is used. So if you change the name of the MTL file, you should also change the name of the reference TO that MTL file inside the OBJ file. Also you have to pay attention to the path that the reference to the MTL file. This is a relative reference. It is easiest to have OBJ and MTL file (plus pictures for textures) in the same directory, because then you don't have to specify the path.

I hope this is clear? If not, say so, and I will provide an example.

To change the reference to the MTL file, you can open the OBJ file with a simple text editor (Windows=Notepad, Ubuntu=gedit, Apple=?) and search for all references to the MTL file.

Let us hear if this solved your problem.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
To avoid problems with renaming or moving files, all imported models and opened files are copied into temporary files or application directory.
So if you experience some problems when saving a SH3D file, I consider it as a bug and it should be fixed, except if you use some temporary files cleaner or you played with files in application directory.
- Under Windows, application directory is C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\eTeks\Sweet Home 3D.
- Under Mac OS X, it's the subfolder Library/Application Support/eTeks/Sweet Home 3D of your user folder.
- Under Linux and other Unix, it's the subdirectory .eteks/sweethome3d of your user directory.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
I did renamed the files, the downloaded files were named with a string of numbers and I couldn't tell which was the one I wanted to import. I had no idea that I was not supposed to this.

Thank you! And one suggestion: could you add this instruction to the users' guide so rookies like me will not have this type of problems?

Thank you once again, it's really a cool program!

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Hello:
I have a very similar problem. I worked with Sweet Home 3D (Version 2.2 Java Version 1.6.0_17) on my iMac (10.6.2) for hours and saved my file on a regularly. I put my Mac in standby to continue the next day. Which I did. But when I tried to save the file then, SH3D said it could not. So I closed the application and reopened it. I also reopened my file and now I see all these red boxes and the background picture is missing, too.

While working, I had created different versions of the file (01, 02, 03 etc.). Older versions of the model still work fine, so I do not think it is a problem of moved or missing objects, although not all objects that I used in the corrupted file are available in the older versions.

I did not understand, what OBJ and MTL files are, but I tried both tips above with terminal, but no success. sad

What should I try next?

Thanks,
Hal

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Hal:

I don't know anything about Mac pc's, but it sounds like a typical operating system (OS) problem.

Windows had a similar problem for a long time (and a long time ago): to speed up programs files were saved to memory, and only when closing the OS was all data written to disk. So if something happened in between, on occasion you would lose information you had saved already (but was not physically written to disk).

Something similar may be happening on your Mac.
So, save and close all programs before putting your Mac to sleep :-)

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
OK, Time Machine made my day, but I have the impression that the file saving strategy with the temporary files needs another revision.

Otherwise, thanks for a great and simple to use software! peace

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Hello. Today, after installing Java Average Frameworked and Art of Illusion, which was completely unstable, I discovered that all my furniture almost 300 Sweet Home 3D, stayed with the X and open in red blocks. Now I'm calmer, but I almost had a deal. I lost all my stuff, the less that comes with the program. And when I read this post I was confused. Yesterday, after saving my stuff in the categories, I delete all ZIP files, because I received this advice in my post about the exclusion of ZIP files. And everything was fine until today when I installed the programs mentioned above. And this post is asking if he changed the files anywhere. I'm confused. I need help. I can delete the ZIP or not? But I turned the computer off 2 times and everything was fine until these two facilities today.
It also struck me those files that the Sweet Home 3D creates in the Documents folder, the. Pref. These files correspond to each one furniture? I always had a few Pref. and never had a problem. I restrained myself to uninstall these programs I installed today for fear of worsening the chances of reversing this situation.
So I will look for help until you uninstall Art of Illusion because it created two installations, in the Program Files and created another Program Files just for him, and will not let me go (I anti-virus and I am administrator). When I installed had a notice that if it was installed wrong was to score, too, the other box and reinstall. And that's what happened. It was something about ... Gray I528 .... do not know what it is, I do not remember right.
On the second try I scored this item as well. I also read the post of the Sara with a part of my problem, but there was my answer. I found a good idea to talk to the same problem here, even if the causes are different. If there is an easy way to do it again I'll download all the furnishings that I can find and move on. And another thing: when I import furniture is very difícel box appears choose to add in the libraries of furniture, but it gave no problem before and I think the culprit is the Java Média...e / or the Art of ... Sorry for all this. Thank you.
I use a translator.More: Almost all my furniture Tracks are in collada.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Sorry for your problem. I don't see how installing the programs you cite could cause any trouble in Sweet Home 3D.
The files prefixed by "Content" and suffixed by ".pref" contains the 3D model or the icon of each piece of furniture you previously imported.
Under which system do you work?

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Hello Puybaret.
My system is Windows Vista.
Yesterday uninstalled the two programs because my start menu was striped. After uninstalling it back to normal. I think everything happened because of one of these programs. I will be alone with the Misfit who never gave trouble.
I have not changed my textures imported pulp and they also stayed with the X after the installation of these programs.
I also completely uninstall Sweet Home to reinstall everything from scratch, since I lost all furniture.
Already understood that, after installing the program, we can not change the folders created by the program in the directory Documents in place. I think this should be in the Tutorial. I had not changed mine, which enhances the fault of both these programs.
What do I need to make sure is:
1 - My favorites are furniture DAE. Can I rename the only importer of furniture and then delete the ZIP file?
2 - Can I relocate the textures that care?
I was in doubt because the hansmex talked about the two early this post. Remember: my furnishings were red boxes.
Thank you. Thank you.
And sorry all this.
After the results speak.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Dharha, you should keep your DAE and texture files somewhere just in case the same problem happen again (I still don't know what happened on your system, and your sad problem might be due to a reason completely different from the one you imagine).
Finding 3D models and images take some time, and deleting their copy on your disk doesn't worth the disk space you'll gain.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Dharha, how comes that your .pref files are in a Documents folder?
There should be in C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\eTeks\Sweet Home 3D directory where user is your login. Did you move them?

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
hahaha ... I do not think my Roaming. Gone.
eTeks AppData is ... There are some files. PREF there and others in Documents / eTeks.
Already recovered almost all furniture and thought about 300, but are nearly 500 .... I need the list that is the program to remember them, and then uninstall everything.
SH3D already downloaded the 2.5 and others. I will follow the tutorials and then I reckon. Maybe in two days.
I have a central library of textures that I use for everything, so do not miss. Keep the ZIP after installing the furnishings. Does that I'm awake 36 hours after the injury. But we also found better things and replace those lost.
Thank you and come back soon to tell. Hug.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Dharha, if you import so many 3D models, you should read the pages about the
Furniture Library Editor and the Export to SH3F plug-in.
By the way, don't get upset, but please, please, find someone to help you translate your messages in English because the automatic translation tool you use doesn't work very well and it's very difficult to understand your messages.

Re: SH3D refuses to save my file
Puibaret Hello!
Sorry about the delay. I have found most of the furniture. All kept on a flash drive.
This post deals with red boxes. Then I'll open another on the current problems.
Excuse the bad English. I will be soon. I'll read the manuals. Thank you. Hug.
