I created what will be a physical wall inside the regular room walls (using several box objects for the various components) so that I could plan the placement of studs, plates, and sheetrock along one side of a staircase in my basement. In carpentry a plate is a 2x4 or larger length of wood that's laid horizontally on its side at the bottom and top of a wall. The vertical studs go between them and connect them...
