Some time ago I found out that there are some transparant material names. WIthout using the D-option, these are transparant. I use them when building all kinds of structures. The nice part is that you can change the colour of the object, but the transparant material will not change colour. So you can make a window, and give it any colour you want, without the glass becoming the same colour, or losing its transparency.
