Re: Revit Files
This question also came up in a private conversation the other day; an architect wanted to know whether he could give a client a copy of a relatively simple house plan, so the client could play with furnishing, colour choices etc. Just a simple, but accurate, copy of the home without the client having to learn or pay for Revit (not cheap).

If I understood correctly Revit can export to a range of different formats. Depending on needs and the complexity of plan, there are two possibilities that could be worth exploring.

  • The obvious one is exporting the house plan to an image file (bmp jpg png gif) and use SH3D Import background image as an outline template. Useful and easy, but maybe not what you had in mind.
  • But there may be another way if you wish to put some effort into it, and Revit can export wall data to a sensible format. This you would need to explore with Revit. Maybe using the free trial and maybe checking some older guides on the ascii dxf format. IF you manage to extract the wall data, it might be possible reformat that data to the .xml used in an SH3D file similar to the test in 7674 using a spreadsheet (Gnumeric) to turn a list of walls into Home.xml used by SH3D.

The latter may look complicated, but the basics worked quite well, even if some post editing with SH3D is to be expected. But then, SH3D has several simple features that will allow you to work quickly. Double click for rooms inside walls, join walls, etc.

The reason for this post is not to recommend the second approach as such, but it would be interesting to see whether someone more skilled could think of a way of doing this. Maybe even code a simple converter or create a plugin for SH3D. Maybe wishful thinking, but still, a way of sharing data might be a pretty good selling point for architects and SH3D both.

And if you feel like experimenting, please, post and share ideas.
