Re: 2D Furniture I think PNG with transparency is the best option too. The width / height of the icon will be resized to fill the piece surrounding rectangle, so there's no constraint on its proportions. The top views computed by Sweet Home 3D from the 3D models are actually stored with 128x128 pixels image in memory, but you could use larger or smaller images if required.
