How to create a customized shelf?

Hello,

I will be building a set of shelves in a small room and before reinventing the wheel I was wondering what would be the best way to do this.

The shelves will be U-shaped and there will be several of them, stacked. Is there a way to create an object "MyOwnBeautifulShelf" and clone / manipulate it afterwards?
Or a way to group several rectangles (planks)? (in that case what would be best to use for the plank?)

Thank you for any ideas!

Re: How to create a customized shelf?

Easy answer, yes.

To find models, look at the 3d model pages and instructions on how to find other objects.
http://www.sweethome3d.com/importModels.jsp

The page also contains information on how to create your own models.

And yes, cloning and grouping several models is also possible. You can combine different geometric figures and play with textures and colours to see whether that works.

Re: How to create a customized shelf?

Thank you! I will be looking at Blender to try and create something, or revert to grouping objects otherwise.

Re: How to create a customized shelf?

Art of Illusion, Blender (or Sketchup, depending on OS). Blender has a very comprehensive (=complex) user interface. Art of Illusion and Sketchup are (much) easier.

Using the tutorials is a good idea to avoid total frustration.

Good luck.
