Re: Small black square "dots" on high quality renderings

Sorry Bernd for this bug. It's miserably very difficult for me to improve this, because I'm not the author of SunFlow the rendering engine used at the two best quality levels. I modified it to avoid it hangs, but the result is some black spots.
Nevertheless, the version 4 gives you some tools to improve this:
- I think that this spots are bound to the shininess level of some objects. Thus reducing the shininess of the materials of the objets that show the spots should help.
- It's now possible to adjust many settings of SunFlow with some parameters given to the program. Rendering will be slower if you require a better quality, but it might help reducing the spots. The idea is that all the settings shown in the file PhotoRenderer.properties (used to set the default parameters of the renderer) can be changed by the user with System properties given at program launch (for example, under Windows, you could use the -Dcom.eteks.sweethome3d.j3d.PhotoRenderer.highQuality.antiAliasing.max=3 in a SweetHome3D.l4j.ini file stored beside sweethome3d.exe, to improve the best rendering quality).
Expect an article about this in the coming weeks.

Re: Small black square "dots" on high quality renderings

Thank you for that information. I did play with the antialiasing setting, but except for a tremendous increase in rendering time I did not achieve any positive effect. The dots were still there.
http://sdrv.ms/14Wl3IS . obviously it would be great to get this solved.

On another rendering issue: I figured that textures sometimes don't render properly. just compare the TV on the wall http://sdrv.ms/14Wl3IS with
http://sdrv.ms/14LYR36 . the only difference is the viewpoint. It is NOT depending on rendering mode 3 or 4, and I have not yet figure out in which cases the texture is hidden and when it works. I did create the TV with sketchup (from scratch) and position a texture myself there and exported it to .obj.
for completeness: In rendering 1 and 2 the texture works always.

Re: Small black square "dots" on high quality renderings

Bernd,

Everything you make in (or download from) Sketchup has (may have) a (potential) problem: the orientation of faces.

Every surface has two faces: left/right or up/down. Have a look at the behaviour of ceilings in SH3D: visible from beneath, invisible from the top. That's because only ONE face has been defined.

A similar problem exists with Sketchup: the definition of faces is defined in a way that SH3D can't handle very well. So, sometimes the left face is shown (gray), sometimes the right face is shown (fire). This happens arbitrarily.

Solution: in Sketchup define BOTH faces of the open fire with the flames texture. That way SH3D will always show the fire, whether the left or the right face of that surface is shown.

Hmmm... that help or not. In my case I saw the black squares for the first time when I changed antiAliasing.max to 3 while with the default value for the same scene they don't appear.

Re: Small black square "dots" on high quality renderings

Too bad sad
SunFlow is a nice library, but it's biggest problem is that it's not maintained anymore, and it's quite difficult to improve it myself even with the help of SunFlow's author.
Maybe it's time to look how to bind Sweet Home 3D to some other rendering engine. I hoped some contributors would try to create that kind of plug-in, but no one tried yet.

Re: Small black square "dots" on high quality renderings

I found my way to solve the problem with black square dots. May be it's like some sort of shaman's danse but it really working for me. Black dots always shows on best rendering level and very often on any object with glass material. So I made a bit of changes on the ploblem models - just add or change a diffuse texture on glass material in another program (I'm using Deep Exploration), and its always working for me.
